Skyline College, which was designated as a Hispanic Serving Institution in 2015, is part of the San Mateo County Community College District, which currently enrolls approximately 23,000 students, the majority of whom are from minoritized populations. Of the students at Skyline College, 2.6% are African American, 0.2% are American Indian, 18.2% are Asian, 18.4% are Filipino, 18.8% are Latinx, 1.2% are Pacific Islander, 19.3% are White, 19.8% are Multi-Ethnic, and 1.7% are unknown.

The Skyline College Promise that students can “Get in. Get through. Graduate …on time!” is the institution's commitment to ensuring that students complete their educational and career goal in a timely manner. Among the strategies and programs that Skyline College needs to deliver on this Promise is the implementation of the Accelerated Study in Associate Programs (ASAP) program model via the Promise Scholars Program.
The Promise Scholars Program is a comprehensive student support model designed to help students achieve their educational goals in 2-year and 3-year time-frames through provision of financial and academic support, as well guided, intrusive and imbedded counseling. The Promise Scholars Program first launched its pilot phase in Fall of 2016 with 139 students, and in the last two years, has grown to serve more than 500 in the Fall 2018 cohort, under full replication of the ASAP model.
The Promise Scholars Program (PSP) Retention Specialist performs paraprofessional work that involves direct outreach to Promise scholars and collaboration with counseling faculty and the Directors of the Promise Scholars Program on various projects and retention efforts to ensure student success. Under direct supervision of the Director of the Promise Scholars Program, the Retention Specialist performs a variety of specialized duties in support of the Promise Scholars Program model. The employee performs a variety of preparatory work and planning and develops strategies to support and enhance student completion and success. Public contact is extensive and primarily includes students, faculty and staff, but can also include vendors and staff in other educational institutions and agencies, for the purpose of exchanging subject matter and procedural information.
A high degree of independent judgment and creativity are required to resolve a wide variety of minor and occasional major problems that may arise. Consequences of errors in judgment can be moderately costly in public relations and employee time; however, supervisory controls are available to limit the risk of serious error. A Retention Specialist can perform a wide variety of duties within the scope of the classification. A Retention Specialist can direct the work of student assistants, clerical staff, and instructional aides, as assigned.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties below are representative of the duties of the classification and are not intended to cover all of the duties performed by the incumbent(s) of any particular position. 1. Assists with outreach and retention of students into specific programs, including developing strategies to enhance student completion and success. Assists in the planning and implementation of an academic support structure to include workshops, study groups, and other program activities as necessary
2. Responsible for tracking, monitoring, and following-up with students and/or faculty regarding deficient progress reports and/or early alert notifications. Tracks and monitors student counseling contacts and follow-up with students as needed
3. Collects and manages data for the Promise Scholars Program
4. Works with counselors to identify key information for students identified for follow-up in the Promise Scholars Program
5. Collaborates with counseling faculty to support the early alert system, identifying students who are under-performing in specific coursework and providing intervention services
6. Exchanges information with students, faculty, and staff regarding subject-matter, resources, materials, policies and procedures or college programs and services
7. Attends meetings, conferences, and workshops to obtain current subject-matter, procedural, and other information
8. Participates in division and department planning activities
9. Provides encouragement and support to students who are undecided about a major by providing information regarding specific majors
10. Makes presentations to small and large groups to publicize the services and programs as assigned
11. Proactively meets with students to monitor their progress
12. Tracks student involvement in on-campus support resources
13. Uses a variety of computer software to organize and maintain learning resources and related data, compose and prepare correspondence, reports, publicity and other materials; sets up and maintains online and manual files; enters, modifies and retrieves a variety of statistical and other data for special and regular reports
14. Trains and leads the work of student assistants, clerical, and other staff as assigned
15. Performs other related duties as assigned
• A combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution• Successful experience of increasing responsibility that has included event planning, assessment, and evaluation• Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff• Demonstrated oral and written communication skills, including public speaking• Experience with the use of a variety of computer software to compose and prepare correspondence, forms, reports, presentations, and other written materials• Experience with research and compiling data for, formatting and preparing statistical, financial and other reports• Skill in setting up and maintaining online and manual files
This classification requires sitting for various lengths of time; the ability to type, use phone, occasionally lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects of light to moderate weight; work at a computer, including viewing a monitor for various lengths of time, repetitive use of keyboard, mouse or other control device, dexterity of hands and fingers to operate keyboard; and ability to operate a motor vehicle and drive to off campus locations in order to perform the essential functions

Benefits include paid holidays, vacation and sick leave. The District pays all or a portion of monthly medical plan premiums (depending on the coverage) and pays all of the monthly dental and vision plan premiums for employees and eligible dependents.
