Requisition # 2018-8967
Department PPPL Advanced Projects
Category Research and Laboratory
Full-Time / Part-Time Full-Time
Application Deadline

Overview

This post-doctoral research position will support the ongoing collaborations between PPPL, the Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) stellarator located in Greifswald, Germany and the LHD stellarator in Toki, Japan. PPPL is the lead US institution in a larger US International Stellarator collaboration that includes partners from ORNL, LANL, University of Wisconsin, Auburn University and MIT as well private industry participation from Xantho Technologies. The applicant will be expected to spend extended periods onsite in both Greifswald and Toki in support of experimental activities. W7-X and LHD are both state-of-the-art superconducting fusion confinement devices intended to operate under near steady-state conditions with pulse lengths up to 60 minutes in fusion relevant conditions - multi-kilovolt temperatures with plasma densities in the range of several times 10 19 -10 20 m -3 . A major question that needs to be understood will be how does the plasma heat and particle flux affect the plasma facing components and, similarly, how do the plasma facing components affect the plasma. PPPL has developed a technology called the powder dropper that allows for the introduction of macroscopic amounts of impurities into the plasma boundary. This technology is planned to be deployed on W7-X and LHD in the near future.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in the installation and use of the powder dropper and help develop it as a tool for plasma edge studies
  • Participate in experiments on W7-X and LHD once the technology is deployed
  • Take an active role in analyzing plasma material interactions on W7-X and LHD and participate in the ongoing US collaboration in this area.

Qualifications

The successful applicant will have a Ph.D in the area of experimental plasma physics in fusion devices or a related field. Knowledge of plasma diagnostic techniques, plasma-wall interaction physics, and/or data acquisition methods is desired, as is . knowledge of existing analysis techniques for stellarator edge plasma modeling. Ability to work in an international team environment is critical.

Letters of reference should be mailed to Dr. David Gates dgates@pppl.gov.
