Overview

Would you like to help academic researchers to advance their groundbreaking research? Do you have a background in systems administration running Linux? Do you want to help support the use of a world class high-performance computing system? If so, then Princeton University is recruiting a Linux administrator to join the Geosciences Department as well as its Research Computing Systems and Storage group.

In this position there would be a dual role focused on supporting research at a departmental level as well as supporting current high-performance clusters. You will guide users on their choice of systems, software and programming issues, support a large installed Linux base of workstations and desktops, plus work with a team of systems administrators running the most modern hardware available.

If you have a strong background in Linux, system administration, some programming experience, and have worked in an academic-like setting, you have the right skill set to make an immediate impact on research at Princeton. This is a five-year term position.



Responsibilities

    Provide installation, maintenance and repair of Linux desktops and laptops as well as server systemsSupport users, helping them one on one or remotely through ticketsInterface between the desktop systems and the high-performance clusters Integrate centralized configuration managementMaintain and write scripts to automate system administration functionsManage small to medium sized disk storage systems Coordinate equipment lifecycle planning and management (from acquisitions to surplus) of Linux/UNIX equipment


Qualifications

Essential Qualifications

    Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field with 2-5 years of experience or 5-10 years of relevant experience in lieu of a bachelor's degreeExperience in the installation, maintenance, operation, tuning, and troubleshooting of Linux and related systems and softwareExperience with programming and scripting languagesExperience with system automation tools such as Puppet, Ansible, or ChefExperience with versioning tools such as Git or SubversionAbility to manage time effectively, working both independently and as part of a teamEnthusiasm for learning new skills and adapting to a dynamic environmentStrong interpersonal skills, enthusiasm for customer service, and the ability to work with students, staff, and faculty from diverse backgroundsExcellent written and oral communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

    Experience using and developing open source software toolsExperience with High Performance Computing cluster technologiesExperience with cloud platformsExperience with programming in one or more compiled languages like C, C++, FortranPrior work experience in an academic or research environment
