About the UnitThe Office of Civic Engagement (OCE) is responsible for a diverse portfolio of programs and initiatives related to community relations, civic and City/State government relations, economic development, and educational outreach programs, while supporting faculty and local community-based research projects and initiatives. The office works closely with internal and external stakeholders on a range of quality of life initiatives, including public education, community development, workforce development, arts and culture, public safety, employer-assisted housing, and civic partnerships. The OCE also leads a set of high profile initiatives that engage university students in local communities, and actively collaborates with units across campus to support student civic engagement and education.

Job Information

Job Summary:

The primary responsibility of the Temporary Program and Operations Assistant is to provide operational and programmatic support for programs and special projects at the Student Civic Engagement Center (SCE).

This is a temporary full-time, 40 hours/week position expected to last through June 30, 2019.


  • Assist Executive Director and senior staff members in the day-to-day programmatic operations of the Student Civic Engagement Center
  • Perform data collection and management on student programs and opportunities including internships, federal work study positions, and other student civic engagement opportunities and pathways
  • Support Executive Director and Assistant Director for Partnerships and Operations on programmatic efforts and implementation on SCE signature programs such as Summer Links, including student application and interview preparation; securing community partner sites; liaising between student groups and community partners; overseeing program implementation
  • Assist Executive Director on preparation and planning for UChicago Alumni Weekend and UChicago Orientation Week 2019
  • Attend, staff, and manage SCE presence at UChicago events (i.e. Alumni Weekend and Orientation Week 2019)
  • Perform special projects as assigned by Executive Director

Additional Requirements

Education, Experience, or Certifications:


  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred


  • 3- 5 years of administrative experience preferred
  • Direct experience in higher education preferred
  • Familiarity with students and educational experience in highly selective, top-tier institutions preferred
  • Experience working with community organizations in Chicago preferred

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

  • Office Environment
  • Travel between Campus and Community Locations
  • Some evenings/weekends for events
