Job Summary:

As part of the Office of Communications’ Media Relations Department, the Manager of Media Relations of UChicago Urban will provide media relations support across multiple schools, institutes, centers, faculty, researchers, and programs -- all dedicated to advancing urban progress, thinking and innovation.

Partnering with civic and community leaders, the units and scholars across UChicago Urban develop evidence-driven, scalable solutions to address the most complex questions facing cities. The Media Relations Manager will support the University’s larger urban portfolio, including, among others, the academic divisions, the professional schools, the Mansueto Institute for Urban Innovation, UChicago Global, and the Office of Civic Engagement. 

The Manager of Media Relations [new role] position was created because there is growing recognition across UChicago that an opportunity exists to more effectively harness and communicate the impact of our diverse, numerous and important urban and community-focused efforts. Reporting to the University’s Director of Media Relations, the Manager of Media Relations’ responsibilities include:

Responsibilities:

  • Developing a media relations plan to measurably drive awareness and positive perception of UChicago’s urban research and civic/community engagement priorities and initiatives among target audiences
  • Maintaining and enhance relationships with key members of the mainstream, trade, and higher education media, including but not limited to reporters, editors, producers, bloggers, and other influencers. Identify key journalists and foster relationships with them in order to successfully pitch stories and connect them with community experts
  • Using knowledge of emerging media outlets, develop a targeted approach to increase engagement with blogs related to urban/community issues and fast-growing news outlets
  • Working closely with the Office of Civic Engagement and The Mansueto Institute to develop creative story ideas and build a calendar of media opportunities and outreach
  • Collaborating closely with the content team to identify experts who can address emerging issues in the news and generate profiles that reinforce the distinctly UChicago approach

Competencies:

  • Extensive experience working with media in print, broadcast, etc.; experience working nimbly with blogs and online news outlets
  • Demonstrated ability to pitch stories and build media relationships
  • Excellent news judgment
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills

    Additional Requirements

    Education, Experience, and Certifications:

    Education:

    • Bachelor’s degree required

    Experience:

    • At least 5 years of professional experience in media relations and/or journalism
    • Familiarity with urban research and scholarship, issues in higher education and/or community relations preferred
