Job Information

Job Summary:

The Program Manager will be responsible for planning and executing specific key initiatives and functions of Polsky Exchange. The Program Manager will support the Small Business Growth Program, which pairs teams of University of Chicago students with South and West Side of Chicago small business owners to address specific business challenges and new strategies for growth. In addition, the Program Manager will help to ensure onsite strategic communications coordination that changes daily to align with onsite activities and strategic marketing priorities. Additionally, the Program Manager will typically work Tuesday to Saturday to provide additional support to our members and programming in the Exchange on the weekends.

Responsibilities:

Manage Small Business Growth Program:

  • Oversight and project management for Small Business Growth Program
  • Market program to potential clients and student consultants
  • Manage recruiting, selection, and onboarding process for student consultants
  • Management of communications, events and milestones for program participants and coaches
  • Manage implementation projects with select small business clients after consulting engagement has concluded
  • Gather and analyze data and feedback on program and events

Program and Strategy Communications Support:

  • Work with Marketing Team and Senior Director to help create and facilitate a robust, changing set of marketing materials onsite.
  • Match daily traffic and meeting populations with strategic marketing materials.

Polsky Exchange Visit and Programming Coordination:

  • Exchange Visits
    • Assist with requests for tours of the Exchange including general public and guests of the University and Polsky Center
    • Assist with bimonthly tours of the Exchange space with coordination of additional staff resources when necessary
  • Programming
    • Facilitate educational programming, including scheduling, registration, room setup and clean up, kicking off workshops, collecting feedback, reporting and supporting A/V with help of TechBar staff
    • Greet and welcome presenters
    • Provide additional support during high usage days/times as well as backup support for the current reception team during lunch transitions and midday meetings as needed (11 AM- 12:30 PM, 3:30- 5PM)
    • Be the main staff contact for Saturday activities at the Exchange.

Other duties as assigned.

Competencies:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication and customer service skills required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint required.
  • Ability to operate in a fast-paced environment and deal with ambiguity, willingness to proactively drive resolution of issues in a timely manner.  
  • Ability to direct a team and work with staff, students, faculty, visitors, community members and vendors at all levels.
  • Ability to use computer for extended periods, keyboarding, bending; stooping; regular attendance.
  • Availability for early evening hours as required (most frequently before 8 pm), occasional early mornings.
  • Ability to travel between the 53rd Street location, the University campus in Hyde Park, and downtown Chicago required, as well as occasional domestic travel.
  • This is an exempt position. Typical hours are expected to be approximately 10am-6pm, Tuesday to Saturday.

    Education, Experience or Certifications:

    Education:

    • Bachelor's degree required.

    Experience:

    • Comfort with public speaking required.
    • Project management experience required.
    • Demonstrated interest in or experience working with or at startups or in economic development.
    • Experience working in events or hospitality preferred
