About the UnitThe Institute for Molecular Engineering (IME), established in 2011 by the University of Chicago in partnership with Argonne National Laboratory, is a transformational academic unit exploring the intersection of science and engineering. IME explores innovative technologies that address fundamental societal problems through advances in nanoscale manipulation and design on a molecular scale. IME is the largest new academic program that the University has started since 1988.

Job Summary:

The mission of the Chicago Immunoengineering Exchange at the University of Chicago is to develop interdisciplinary, practice-changing approaches to treat disease through innovative immunology-based technology platforms and applications. The CIE will be led by a Director appointed by the Dean of the Institute for Molecular Engineering, a position that will be supported administratively by an Executive Director. This staff-level position will be responsible for the overall strategic planning and operations of CIE and will report directly to the Director.

Responsibilities:

  • Help develop strategic plan for the Exchange, including but not limited to scientific priorities, research infrastructure (e.g., shared resources, clinical trials, grants management, etc.), funding (from philanthropic, federal, non-profit, and private sector sources), training and career development, marketing/communications, partnerships, and faculty development.
  • Oversee the development of research infrastructure to support Exchange research priorities. This includes:
    • Manage the development of key shared resources to support Center investigators as well as external users, including establishing equipment and service needs, fee structure, technical and scientific directors, faculty advisory committees, websites and user forms
    • Partner with existing University of Chicago Medicine and Biological Sciences Division clinical trial infrastructure (scientific review, IRB approval, regulatory management, etc.) to facilitate translation of laboratory findings into clinical application and practice
    • Support and facilitate the submission of multi-investigator and collaborative grant applications such as P01s, U01s, etc.
  • Develop, maintain and expand partnerships with key internal and external stakeholders to promote the mission of the Exchange and make progress in the strategic plan. Such partners include but are not limited to UChicago Medicine, University of Chicago Medicine Comprehensive Cancer Center, Duchossois Family Institute, Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Institute of Translational Medicine, the National Institutes of Health, the National Cancer Institute, Argonne National Laboratory, and Marine Biological Laboratory.
  • Help develop and execute a plan for funding Exchange research initiatives from federal, non-profit, philanthropic and corporate (pharm and biotech) sources. Depending on the funding opportunity and partners involved, this may include substantial grant or proposal writing, information gathering, and submission.
  • Develop pathways for translational research with partners in the Polsky Center including technology commercialization and licenses, development of new start-up companies, and engagement with large companies and with venture investors. Serve as key facilitator between Polsky services and faculty to enable programmatic activity.
  • Lead pursuit of funding for a training and career development program for young scientists interested in careers in translational immunoengineering. This includes developing a training grant to support graduate students and postdoctoral fellows and providing research experiences and training opportunities for high school and undergraduate students.
  • Develop and execute a marketing/communications plan for enhancing visibility of the Center, to both external and internal audiences. Specific communications vehicles include social media, website, annual report, faculty electronic newsletters, progress reports, etc.
  • Provide support for Center faculty, especially junior investigators, for building their translational research programs, including linking them to collaborators and institutional infrastructure, helping with grant application editing/reviewing, and increasing their visibility (e.g., award nomination, reputation building, sharing research accomplishments, etc.).
  • Other administrative duties as assigned.

Additional Requirements

Education, Experience or Certification:

Education:

  • Advanced degree required.

Experience:

  • At least 5 years of academic administrative and/or program development experience required.
  • Experience in biomedical research writing required.
  • Supervisory experience required.
  • Strong administrative and organizational skills, ability to complete tasks in timely manner required.
  • Effectively communicate in both written and verbal format required.
  • Able to work independently with a high degree of initiative required.
  • Familiarity with higher education environment and knowledge of the University of Chicago’s unique culture preferred.

Technical Knowledge or Skills:

  • Proficiency with computers, including MS Office and network functions, required.
