Postdoctoral Research Fellow

This position is responsible for conducting research in collaboration with Professor Sarah Gilman. This position is for a maximum of twelve months and is supported through a grant funded by the National Science Foundation, with an anticipated end-date of May 31, 2020. The research goals are to use a combination of laboratory studies, computer modeling, and field experiments to test the relative influence of temperature stress and energy limitation on the upper vertical limit of an intertidal barnacle (Balanus glandula)
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Reporting to Professor Gilman, the postdoctoral researcher performs the following essential duties and responsibilities, in collaboration with Professor Gilman and any undergraduate students in the lab:
Expand and develop MatLab-based computer code to model barnacle growth under varying food and temperature conditions (40%). Conducts laboratory experiments on the respiration and feeding rates of barnacles under different thermal and tidal regimes (20%). Designs and implements field experiments, at sites in California and Washington states, to test computer model predictions (10%). Analyzes resulting data and writes manuscripts for publications (10%). Mentors and supervises undergraduate research students in the lab (20%). Maintains basic laboratory organization, including the stocking of reagents and ordering of equipment. (5%). Gains teaching experience by co-teaching an undergraduate course with Professor Gilman (optional – 5%). Performs other essential duties and tasks specific to the position.

Ph.D. in Ecology, Marine Biology, Physiology or a related field is required
A minimum of 1 year of experience in coding or computer modeling (Matlab or R preferred) and either whole animal respirometry or experimental intertidal field ecology.
A valid driver’s license or equivalent means of reliable transportation to off-site meetings and events is required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES: Individual must possess knowledge, skills, and ability to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the position, or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of knowledge skills and abilities.
Demonstrate a basic understanding of experimental design and statistical analysis including the use of analysis software (e.g. SPSS, R or SAS), and a familiarity with standard procedures for intertidal field experiments.
Operate standard respirometry equipment to take oxygen consumption measurements of study animals.
Demonstrate a basic knowledge of computer programming in Matlab or similar software.
Demonstrate effective, accurate and clear communication with excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, reading, and leadership skills to supervise, facilitate, motivate and inspire a highly diverse group of undergraduate students (student volunteers and/or student employees).
Operate computers with basic Microsoft Office software (such as Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint).
Handle all activities with patience, discretion, good judgment, courtesy and tact while working with people from a wide variety of backgrounds.
Operate the College’s vehicles safely for off-campus-related work and meet all insurance-related requirements.
REQUIRED HOURS: The regular hours for this full time position are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday – Friday. Holiday, weekend and evening work hours may be required. Travel may be required. Regular hours may vary due to needs of the College or division. This is a 12 month position.
