Description:

Reporting to the Associate Vice President and Dean of Students, the Assistant Dean of Students and Director of Student Advocacy & Prevention Awareness is responsible for coordinating work on campus that addresses: critical incident management; proactive student education regarding substance abuse prevention, sexual abuse, violence prevention, and healthy lifestyle choices; compliance with mandated requirements, such as those connected with Title IX, the Clery Act, VAWA, Enough is Enough and the Drug Free Campuses Act; both proactive and responsive retention advocacy for students with complicated life issues. 

The Assistant Dean and Director of Student Advocacy & Prevention Awareness strategically and intentionally coordinates collaborative work regarding these important issues within the other 15 Division of Student Affairs (DSA) departments and other campus partners (such Legal Affairs, Enrollment, Public Safety, Athletics, Institutional Research, and the Schools and Colleges). 

The Assistant Dean and Director coordinates community service initiatives, supervises community outreach and commuter student services, as well as peer education and peer mentorship opportunities. They will establish and maintain close, positive, and educative contact with students, student leaders, and student employees in relation to these prevention and compliance efforts. 

The Assistant Dean and Director co-chairs the CARES Team (Community Assessment Response and Evaluation of Students) with the Associate Dean of Students, including the key responsibility of monitoring and intervention of students with significant retention challenges. In addition, they will serve as a Hofstra Title IX Deputy for Education.

The Assistant Dean and Director is responsible for on-call responsibilities and required to serve on a professional duty rotation basis for evenings and weekends, responding to student concerns and campus critical incidents reported to the institution. The Assistant Dean and Director is a professional, 12-month, live-in position. Hofstra provides an unfurnished apartment located in the residential complex to fulfill the on-call responsibilities.

Specific duties of the position include:
• Work collaboratively with AVP/DOS to coordinate strategic planning initiatives in critical incident management, student outreach, peer education, and community service.
• Manage and supervise office operations; develop and administer all departmental, programmatic and educational budgets.
• Manage and create service learning initiatives both office and division wide, focused on increased student connections with the surrounding communities and a focus on civic engagement as part of a student-centered experience. Serve as a liaison to the Center for Civic Engagement concerning collaborative programs to enhance support of service programs throughout the Hofstra community.
• Coordinate community service, peer education, and peer mentorship opportunities.
• Supervise the Director of Commuter Student Services and Community Outreach, to encourage full commuter student participation and campus engagement.
• Serve on a professional duty rotation basis for evenings and weekends, responding to student concerns and campus critical incidents
• Supervise Assistant Director for Service and Peer Advocacy.
• Supervise Senior Assistant to the Assistant Dean and Director of Student Advocacy and Prevention Awareness.
• Recruit, select, and lead one Graduate intern to assist in all aspects of community service. 
• Co-chair the CARES Team (Community Assessment Response and Evaluation of Students) with the Senior Assistant Dean of Students.
• Coordinate DSA and campus-wide health advocacy and abuse prevention efforts, including mental health, physical health, alcohol and other drugs, and sexual misconduct.
• Represent the DSA on campus and off-campus in educative and prevention efforts to enhance healthy initiatives for student success and persistence.
• Assure University compliance with educational and training mandates of Title IX, VAWA, Cleary, Drug-Free Campuses, Enough is Enough, etc.
• Implement NIAAA (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism) recommendations for college campuses best practices.
• Interact regularly with students, faculty, parents/families, and other campus and off-campus partners.
• Direct strategy for and be knowledgeable of student affairs best-practices for prevention, compliance, and retention efforts.
• Provide appropriate professional development to DSA and campus colleagues regarding these areas.
• Use technologies and data to inform and monitor efforts within areas of responsibility.
• Be active locally, regionally, and nationally in organizations that support and inform these areas.
• Guide and support professional staff in development and implementation of standard operating procedural documents as well as strategic planning.
• Maintain and update all website content on a consistent basis to reflect current information and practices.
• Serve as the liaison with the Hofstra Interfaith Center, ensuring that important Divisional information is shared with all University Chaplains and their staff and that the Interfaith Center space is provided with basic supplies.
• Work closely with colleagues in the Student Health and Counseling Center (SHACC) and the Title IX Officer for Student issues on programming, interventions, and strategy.
• Other duties within the Division of Student Affairs as assigned.

Qualifications:

Graduate degree (in higher education, student affairs, counseling, social work, public health, or other directly related discipline) and at least five years of full-time related experience in student affairs, counseling, health education, or directly related fields in a higher education setting required.

The successful candidate will possess excellent human relations skills, ability to manage multiple projects and responsibilities, perform highly detailed work, strong quantitative and analytical skills, work well under pressure, have comfort with appropriate technologies, and have a passion for working with students of diverse backgrounds. Excellent interpersonal, teaching/presenting, and problem-solving skills are essential. Demonstrated service orientation and a mentoring philosophy, and readiness to develop skills needed to serve every unit within the broad scope of the University. 

The ideal candidate will have a collaborative disposition and possesses the ability to think both critically and strategically. The position is required to live on-campus in an unfurnished apartment Hofstra provides, located in the residential complex to fulfill on-call and crisis management responsibilities. Extended hours will be required on a regular basis, including a variety of evening, early morning, and weekend assignments.
