CLAFLIN UNIVERSITY, founded in 1869, is becoming recognized as one of the leading institutions of higher education in the southeast.  With an enrollment of approximately 1800 students from every region of the United States and 14 countries, Claflin University is a comprehensive institution offering undergraduate degrees in 34 areas and three graduate programs, the Master of Business Administration, the Master of Science in Biotechnology, and the Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction.

REPSONSIBILITIES: The Department of Social Sciences at Claflin University seeks to hire an assistant/associate professor to chair the department.  Responsibilities will include:  The Department Chair serves as the chief administrative officer responsible for all administrative and leadership aspects of a degree-granting department.  Duties include budget planning, personnel management, facilities management, and the daily supervision of full-time and adjunct faculty.  Additional teaching responsibilities may include other courses within the candidate’s area of expertise.  The Department Chair is also expected to participate fully in departmental recruitment activities within the state and nationally, campus committee service, performance, and research obligations consistent with all faculty appointments.

QUALIFICATIONS:  The successful candidate must possess experience in college level teaching and advising that hold a PhD in one of the departmental disciplines.  Applicants must a strong commitment to strengthening a multi-disciplinary department and the university’s mission of teaching, research, and service at a liberal arts institution with a focus on undergraduate research. The ideal applicant has administrative experience and/or evidence of potential for effective administration and communication; a national reputation for excellence in research and teaching; an active research agenda and experience in securing major grants; and strong leadership, organizational and interpersonal skills.

SALARY:  Salary and rank commensurate with qualifications and experience.
