South Puget Sound Community College (SPSCC) seeks a highly enthusiastic, motivated, and qualified individual for the position of Cook 1 to serve as Lead Cook for Clipper Café providing professional and technical coordination of daily café operations including oversight of food preparation, sales and customer service.

What You'll Do


The Cook 1 general responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Pre-prep food items for breakfast and lunch menus
  • Take orders from customer and prepare a variety of breakfast and lunch foods
  • Work collaboratively with program faculty to develop menu's and plan weekly and daily food specials
  • Knowledge of and sensitive to food allergies and special dietary requirements
  • Maintain and operate the point of sale system for café operations
  • Compile and prepare purchase orders for café supplies
  • Provide quality and timely customer service in Clipper Café
  • Communicate professionally in a diverse manner to all staff, students and customers

Support daily café operations including opening, and closing procedures, quality control, and compliance with safe food handling practices.
  • Perform opening duties
  • Coordinate dish room functions
  • Work directly with faculty members to direct students work
  • Perform kitchen and café opening and closing duties
  • Ensure proper food handling procedures are followed
  • Store leftover product in a sanitary and cost-effective manner
  • Work in conjunction with catering for hourly employees

Successful candidates will have knowledge of practices, methods, and procedures of large scale food preparation and serving; personal hygiene, food handling, sanitation, and safety precautions; care and use of kitchen utensils and equipment; record keeping; report preparation; personnel functions.

The Cook 1 requires strong organizational skills, ability to work independently and prioritize multiple tasks, work under pressure, meet deadlines, and accommodate numerous interruptions while performing multiple tasks as well as have the physical ability to perform job duties, work independently, prioritize multiple tasks.

This position must be able to communicate effectively orally and in writing and work effectively with staff in a pleasant and productive manner, and be able to stand and walk for long period of time; bend, climb and reach; and lift, pull or push objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

Qualifications You Possess

Minimum Qualifications

  • One year of experience in food preparation or cooking. Completion of course in large-scale cooking may be substituted for experience.
  • Must possess a current Washington State Food Handler's Card.
  • Must be able to work in an environment that values a diverse group of students, faculty and staff.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Two years of cooking experience in a large-scale food service or culinary operation; completion of course in large-scale cooking may be substituted for one year of experience.
  • Short order breakfast and lunch experience.
