The University of North Texas System Office of General Counsel has an immediate opening for an Assistant General Counsel to join a dedicated team of attorneys. The University of North Texas System includes the UNT System Administration in Dallas, the University of North Texas, the University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth, and the University of North Texas at Dallas. The UNT System Office of General Counsel includes eleven attorneys and six support staff. The Assistant General Counsel will provide comprehensive legal advice and assistance to UNT System and its component institutions under the direction of a Senior Associate General Counsel.

Job Description
The University of North Texas System Office of General Counsel has an immediate opening for an Assistant General Counsel to join a dedicated team of attorneys and professional support staff. The University of North Texas System includes the UNT System Administration, the University of North Texas, the University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth, and the University of North Texas at Dallas. The UNT System Office of General Counsel includes eleven attorneys and six support staff located in offices on the campus of UNT in Denton and at the UNT System headquarters in downtown Dallas; this position is located in Denton. The Assistant General Counsel will provide comprehensive legal advice and assistance to the UNT System and its component institutions under the direction of a Senior Associate General Counsel. Travel to other UNT System locations is required to provide the high quality client service that is the hallmark of the office.

The Assistant General Counsel will provide written and oral advice, conduct legal research and provide analysis, and conduct training as needed to keep the System and institutions and the members of the Office of General Counsel current on laws and regulations impacting assigned areas. This position will have a portfolio that focuses primarily in the areas of student affairs, equal opportunity, international programming, risk management and insurance, athletics, public records, litigation management, policy development and implementation and general higher education issues.

In addition to an expectation that candidates be able to demonstrate excellent communication skills (written and oral) and the ability to research complex legal issues and prepare legal opinions and documents, candidates for the position should also expect to be able to offer evidence of:

* An ability to work collegially and to represent university clients in an ethical, professional, and tactful manner.
* An ability to identify and frame complex legal issues and to convey advice clearly and effectively to nonlawyers.
* An ability to recognize and communicate with the General Counsel and other members of the office about matters of significance affecting the UNT System and its component institutions.
* An ability and willingness to engage in creative thinking and problem solving.
* An ability to establish cooperative working relationships with members of the Office of General Counsel and with the varied constituents within the UNT System and its component institutions.
* Excellent time management and prioritization skills.
* The ability to work independently and to be self-motivated while handling multiple assignments in an array of substantive areas with moderate supervision.
* A strong sense of intellectual curiosity and a desire to learn new areas of the law quickly.
* Discretion and the ability to gain trust and maintain confidences.

Minimum Qualifications
Applicants must have at least three years of experience practicing law, preferably in a higher education setting or with higher education clients. The successful candidate will be licensed to practice law and in good standing in Texas, or eligible to be licensed in Texas within one year from the date of employment. A juris doctorate from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association is required.
