Students from all 50 states and 126 countries converge on one of the nation’s most beautiful campuses. Big 12 sports and a tradition of cultural and popular performances make campus life fun and memorable. Iowa State is a land-grant university, as well as the largest university in the state of Iowa, and the ISU class of 2022 has the highest-ever average high school GPA for an incoming Iowa State class. The campus is located in Ames, a community of 60,000 situated approximately 30 minutes north of Des Moines, and was recently voted one of the best college towns in the nation and among the top 10 best places to live in America.

Iowa State is a global and culturally diverse university committed to providing an inclusive, equitable, and diverse environment for both learning and employment. Knowing that diversity in experience and perspective is vital to advancing innovation, critical thinking, solving complex problems, and building an inclusive academic community, Iowa State translates these values into action by seeking individuals who have experience working with diverse students, colleagues, and constituents.

The Memorial Union (MU) at Iowa State University is a 316,713 square foot multipurpose facility that serves as the hub of the campus and the center for student life and co-curricular activities, as well as an event and meeting venue for the campus and local community. The Memorial Union opened in 1928 and boasts 11 additions over the years. The building houses many campus partners, including ISU dining, Bookstore, Legal Services, Printing, International Student Services, Study Abroad, and Veteran’s Services, as well as a 600-stall parking ramp, the Student Activities Center, a bowling center, an art studio, a live music venue, and 27 meeting and event spaces. With over two million visitors each year, the Memorial Union hosts thousands of events and provides hundreds of outstanding programs for ISU and the surrounding community. In order to provide top quality programs and services, the Memorial Union seeks to hire only the best service-oriented, team-focused, and solution-focused individuals.

Reporting to the Director of the Memorial Union, the Associate Director provides operational planning, direction, oversight, and supervision of the facility and ensures the MU and related facilities are maintained to the highest standards. The Associate Director oversees and provides guidance for general building operations, budget, and policies, and also negotiates agreements with ISU Procurement to secure services with ISU authorized vendors for MU facilities, grounds, and maintenance projects. The Associate Director collaborates with the MU Facilities Maintenance Manager to manage deferred maintenance, work order requests, construction projects, trades, remodeling, renovation, the MU Parking Ramp, and building grounds. The Associate Director oversees MU Information Technology and administers security and emergency management procedures and protocols. The Associate Director develops and administers a dynamic student staff training program in coordination with the Director and MU Student Team Trainers using sound student development principles. The Associate Director will also be responsible for recruiting, selecting, training, and supervising the MU Student Building Managers. Additionally, the Associate Director serves as direct supervisor to the Student Government Advisor; partners with the Assistant Director of Hospitality Services to provide efficient, high quality, and service-oriented event management and facilities to all guests; manages a dynamic team of five direct reports; and assists in the development and administration of an annual operating budget of $7 million.

The successful candidate will possess the ability to create positive, transparent, and open relationships with staff, students, and faculty; a positive mindset and focus on integrity at all times; the ability to appropriately handle stress and to multitask; an openness to the ideas and opinions of others in the decision-making process; the ability to build, empower, and hold student teams accountable; a strong proficiency in collaboration and positively working with others; and excellent training, speaking, presentation, and facilitation skills.

A bachelor’s degree and eight years of related experience; or a Master’s degree and six years of related experience; or a PhD (or other professional degree) and three years of related experience are required. Preferred qualifications include project management of capital construction projects and vendor contracts experience; facilities management and operations experience in a university, hospitality or public access facility setting, with knowledge of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, maintenance, and repairs contracts; event management experience in college unions, including leadership or management of set-up, audio-visual, and IT operations; experience advising, training, and supervising college students; and a master’s degree in college student development, education, or closely related field.
