Position Summary

Reporting to the Associate Director of Admissions, the Admissions Counselor is responsible for supporting the Office of Admissions in identifying, attracting and enrolling an academically talented and diverse student body.

The Admissions Counselor acts as the College’s representative for all aspects of the admissions operation both on and off-campus.


Essential Functions

Offer is contingent upon successful completion of a criminal background check.

This is a term position anticipated to end on May 7, 2021.

  • Represent the College at high school visits, college fairs, on and off-campus events and other recruiting activities. Makes presentations to large groups within the office and while traveling.
  • Evaluate admissions applications and participate in committee deliberations and decisions for first year and transfer students.
  • Manage or help manage one or more programs or activities in the office, i.e., tour guides, visit programs, publications, etc.
  • Manage one or more recruitment territories.
  • Advise high school guidance counselors regarding candidate applications.
  • Respond to candidates’ questions in a timely manner and helps explain admissions procedures.
  • Provide service and information to alumni volunteers assisting in the admissions process.
  • Help to select students to be admitted from the waiting list and contact them upon admission to the College.
General Responsibilities
  • Carry out other duties as assigned.

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Familiarity with Middlebury College required.
  • Recent Middlebury graduate preferred.
  • Strong cross-cultural, interpersonal and writing skills are necessary, including public speaking skills and the ability to present the College in a positive way to diverse populations.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Computer familiarity.
  • Ability to work collegially and collaboratively.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as in a team setting.
  • Evening and weekend work is routine during busier seasons.

No previous admissions experience required.

Physical Demands
  • Sitting and operating computer for extended periods of time, particularly during application reading season.
  • Ability to work in a wide variety of conditions and environments depending on the time of year: the office; schools, hotels, and homes while on the road; and occasionally from home.
  • Light physical activity is often required: moving tables and chairs, carrying materials on the road, lifting small boxes.
  • Extensive travel required, including in inclement weather.
