Residence Director

Lake Forest College is seeking qualified candidates for Residence Director. The Residence Director position is a 10-month position in the Office of Residence Life, with the possibility of summer employment, reporting to the Director of Residence Life. The successful candidate is energetic, dedicated, progressive, culturally competent, and student-centered. It is expected that the person in this position will maintain a high level of student interaction and visibility at campus programs and activities.

A highly selective liberal arts college located in a suburb of Chicago, Lake Forest College enrolls more than 1,500 students from more than 47 states and 78 countries. Located just 30 miles north of Chicago, the College is a coeducational, undergraduate institution offering students the opportunities and challenges of a liberal arts education. The College’s student body is culturally diverse, with nearly 40% of our students identifying as ethnic minority or international students. We also have a visible, active, and vibrant LGBTQIA+ student population.

Primary Responsibilities

Supervise, train and develop 7-12 paraprofessional staff; manage 2-3 residence halls; oversee in-hall leadership development and event planning; serve as a College hearing officer; and respond to student emergencies while serving in an on-call rotation. Residence Directors participate in a collateral assignment. Previous collateral assignment opportunities have focused on student conduct, paraprofessional training, paraprofessional selection, student organization advising or housing operations.

Staff visibility is an important value at our small institution. Professional and paraprofessional staff members are expected to engage residents in building vibrant, inclusive communities. The Residence Director will be an involved leader who will take proactive steps toward developing these positive, residential communities. Further, Residence Directors play a critical role in supporting student success at Lake Forest College through collaboration with faculty partners and individual connections with students.

Residence Life employs a culturally diverse paraprofessional staff representative of our student body, therefore the successful candidate will have an interest in and ability to mentor, guide, and support a diverse group of students.

Residence Directors are Clery campus security authorities and Title IX responsible employees (mandatory reporters).

Requirements

Master’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Prior residence life experience is preferred. Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate experience supervising students, mediating student conflicts and advocating for and supporting a variety of student needs. This position entails working a changing and flexible schedule, including evening and weekend commitments.

Remuneration

Salary is commensurate with experience. This is a live-in position with a furnished apartment, including high speed internet access and a partial meal plan during the academic year. Residence Directors are welcome to have a partner, spouse, or other family member live with them. Additional provisions may apply.

On-campus parking is provided at no additional cost. Residence Directors also receive complimentary membership to the campus Recreation Center and a cell phone monthly allowance. Lake Forest College has a generous partner benefit.

Lake Forest College’s pet policy for live-in staff allows for fish in an aquarium; up to two caged domestic pets (e.g. birds, hamsters, rabbits) OR two cats or one dog weighing less than 35 pounds.
