The Department of Mathematics and Statistics ( at the University of North Carolina Wilmington invites applications for the position of tenure-track Assistant Professor in Statistics starting August 2019. The successful candidate is expected to teach introductory and advanced statistics courses, engage students in research at the undergraduate and graduate levels, maintain a vigorous, extramurally funded research program, and contribute to department service. The department offers undergraduate programs in mathematics and statistics, and graduate programs in mathematics, statistics, and data science. The department and university are committed to assisting new faculty to succeed through continual faculty development and mentorship. The department is especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute, through their research, teaching, and service, to the diversity and excellence of the academic community.

Minimum Requirements

A doctoral degree in statistics or biostatistics or a closely related field is required at the time of appointment.

Preferred Qualifications

Candidates from all fields are invited to apply. Applicants with research expertise in the areas of probability, applied probability, Bayesian inference, computational statistics or clinical trials are encouraged to apply. Priority will be given to candidates able to complement existing disciplinary strengths.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics offers programs leading to undergraduate degrees in mathematics, statistics, and teacher licensure, as well as a graduate degree in mathematics, a graduate certificate in applied statistics, and a joint graduate degree in data science with the computer science department. The department consists of 28 faculty members, approximately 20 graduate students/teaching assistants and approximately 130 majors. (
