This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent (probationary) position. This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

The Facilities Coordinator is responsible for managing the Department Major Instruments (mass spectrometers, LC-MS, GC-MS, LC, GC, FT-IR spectrometers, UV-visible spectrometers, Raman, Fluorometer, circular dichroism, X-ray diffraction, etc.) in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry under the direct supervision of the Department Chair. Responsibilities include the maintenance and servicing (or coordination of servicing) of major instruments needed in upper-division and graduate-level capstone laboratory courses. The incumbent shall perform calibrations, diagnose/solve electronics, hardware and software problems, upgrade hardware and software, create detailed documentation, e.g., problems, observations, communications, etc., and evaluate and order related components.

This position is also responsible for helping professors, lecturers and TAs in teaching upper-division capstone laboratory courses and training students to use department major instruments. The incumbent shall design experiments, train faculty and students in the use of the major instruments, assist faculty and students in acquiring data, assist faculty and students in analyzing spectra, provide analysis for industry and other universities, assist in teaching theory and applications (mass spectrometers, LC-MS, GC-MS, LC, GC, FT-IR, Raman, etc.) for SDSU chemistry classes, e.g., Chem 457, 417, 427 and 537.

Starting salary upon appointment not expected to exceed $4,750 per month. CSU Classification Salary Range: $4,107 - $7,214 per month. Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.

Minimum Qualifications

Equivalent to three years of experience providing instructional support services for a related unit or discipline, or in producing materials or supplies or repairing equipment in a discipline related to specialty area to which assigned.

Preferred Qualifications and Specialized Skills

  • B.A. or B.S., M.S. or Ph.D. degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or related scientific or engineering field.
  • Experience working in a laboratory environment or experience purchasing scientific equipment.
  • Proficient in using mass spectrometers (LC-MS, GC-MS, MALDI, etc.).
  • Proficient in solving electronics, hardware and software problems for major instruments (mass spectrometers, LC-MS, GC-MS, LC, GC, FT-IR, UV-vis, Raman, Fluorometer, circular dichroism, etc.)
  • Able to design experiments.
  • Able to maintain local area network.
  • Able to transport full liquid nitrogen Dewars that weigh up to 560 pounds.
  • Communicate well with faculty, students and service personnel.
  • Teach faculty and students to acquire data and interpret spectra.
  • Help teach courses that incorporate applications.
  • Provide analytical services, data acquisition and spectral interpretation, for local industry and universities.
  • Create detailed documentation, e.g., regarding problems, observations, communications, equipment operation, etc.
  • Evaluate and order related components.
  • Back up computer systems.
  • Must be capable of understanding the theoretical and technical nature of the problems that arise, and be capable of finding their solutions.
  • Requires a reasonable background in science and knowledge of health and safety guidelines.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills that permit interaction among a wide variety of academic and nonacademic individuals with problem-solving capabilities.
  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Chemistry, Biochemistry or related discipline with a knowledge of principles of providing support services; knowledge of the common principles, methods, and techniques related to the discipline; knowledge of the materials, supplies and equipment and their uses related to the discipline.Four years of experience of using major instruments, providing instructional support services, producing materials or supplies, or repairing equipment in a discipline related to the areas to which assigned, i.e., chemistry and biochemistry.Knowledge of the discipline particularly in recognizing the commonality between services required for various courses and for developing systems for maximizing facilities and equipment.
  • Experience with San Diego State University procurement policies and procedures.
  • Experience with San Diego State University and SDSU Foundations policies and procedures.
