Position: Visiting Assistant Professor of English                                                   

Stetson University seeks a broadly trained teacher-scholar of U.S. Literature for a full-time one-year visiting appointment. In addition to the ability to teach a variety of undergraduate literature and writing classes, the successful candidate will have demonstrated interest and accomplishments in field, and in interdisciplinary interests, such as social justice studies, eco-criticism, or gender studies.

Qualifications:

Ph.D. in literature in hand or expected by August 2019, with an active scholarly agenda and demonstrated excellence in teaching undergraduates. We are particularly interested in candidates from diverse backgrounds or who have experience enhancing services, broadening curricula, or serving as a role model for diverse student populations.

Responsibilities:  

The teaching load is 4/4. Teaching assignments will include 100-level literature and writing courses (the focus of which is instructor-chosen), a 200-level course in Reading Narrative, and a 300-level course in field (the focus of which is instructor-chosen).

The Department:

The English Department (https://www.stetson.edu/artsci/english/) offers a major in English, and minors in English and in English/Creative Writing. The department also hosts a new low-residency M.F.A. in Literature of the Americas, taught off-campus. Outside the MFA, our primary focus is undergraduate learning, whether that's done in courses for the major and minor, General Education courses, or interdisciplinary courses.

College of Arts and Sciences:

Stetson’s College of Arts and Sciences (http://www.stetson.edu/portal/artsci/) is the largest and most diverse of the University’s colleges and schools; it includes the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, education, and creative arts.  With nineteen academic departments and eight interdisciplinary programs, the College is the liberal arts core of the University.  A great strength of the College is its faculty of approximately 140 full-time teacher-scholars.  The College offers 31 undergraduate majors and 34 undergraduate minors; six graduate degrees are offered in Education, Counselor Education, and Creative Writing.  Every undergraduate major requires a senior research project, giving students the opportunity to design and carry out independent research under faculty mentorship.  Our academic programs are shaped by the values of social justice and civic responsibility.  All of our courses and programs of study promote engaged learning, whereby students create connections between the classroom or lab and the local, regional, and global community.  The academic programs of the College of Arts and Sciences prepare students to live significant lives, to interact with and positively affect the world around them.

The Community:

DeLand is a picturesque residential community of 32,000 located 20 miles west of Daytona Beach and 35 miles northeast of Orlando. The area offers extensive cultural as well as recreational activities.

Salary:  Salary is competitive.
