Scope of Job:
The College of Engineering and Computer Science at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) invites applications for a non-tenure-track Lecturer position in the Department of Computer Science to begin in the fall of 2019. Position tasks include teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses in computer science, advisement of students, and departmental service. The position is a 3-year appointment, renewable based on favorable annual evaluations and budget availability.

Minimum Qualifications:
Masters in Computer Science or related discipline from an accredited university.

Discipline Specific Required Qualifications:
The successful candidate is expected to have a strong commitment to teaching, developing creative and effective pedagogy, and advising students. The candidate should be able to teach a wide range of core computer science courses at the upper- and lower-division undergraduate levels.

UTRGV faculty will be expected to demonstrate a strong commitment to student success and to advancing the university, college, and department missions. Faculty are also expected to demonstrate a strong commitment UTRGV strategic plan (http://www.utrgv.edu/strategic-plan), and to promote access to post-secondary education to a diverse student body and to become one of the largest and most successful Hispanic-serving emerging research institutions in the U.S.

Preferred Qualification:
Preferred qualifications include holding a Doctorate in Computer Science or related discipline from an accredited university, ability to teach graduate computer science courses, having teaching experience in an ABET accredited computer science program, and teaching experience at a Hispanic Serving Institution.

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 as the first major public university of the 21st century in Texas. This transformative initiative provided the opportunity to expand educational opportunities in the Rio Grande Valley, including a new School of Medicine, and made it possible for residents of the region to benefit from the Permanent University Fund - a public endowment contributing support to the University of Texas System and other institutions.

UTRGV has campuses and off-campus research and teaching sites throughout the Rio Grande Valley including in Boca Chica Beach, Brownsville (formerly The University of Texas at Brownsville campus), Edinburg (formerly The University of Texas-Pan American campus), Harlingen, McAllen, Port Isabel, Rio Grande City, and South Padre Island. UTRGV, a comprehensive academic institution, enrolled its first class in the fall of 2015, and the School of Medicine welcomed its first class in the summer of 2016.

UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may
require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is
performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code
§51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of
Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.

Please Note:
Texas law requires faculty members whose primary language is not English to
demonstrate proficiency in English as determined by a satisfactory paper-based
test score of 500 (computer-based of 173 or internet-based of 61) on the Test of
English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or a satisfactory test score of 6.0 on the
International English Language Testing System (IELTS). All positions are subject to budget approval.

A New University with a Long History

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 in a historic move that brings together the resources and assets of UT Brownsville and UT Pan American and, for the first time, makes it possible for residents of the Rio Grande Valley to benefit from the Permanent University Fund—a public endowment contributing support to the University of Texas System and the Texas A&M University System.

 

Our new university will also be home to a School of Medicine and will transform Texas and the nation by becoming a leader in student success, teaching, research, and health care. UTRGV will enroll its first class in the fall of 2015, and the School of Medicine will open in 2016.

 

UT Brownsville and UT Pan American

The shared history of The University of Texas Pan American and The University of Texas at Brownsville goes back to 1927, when Edinburg College was founded. In 1973, Pan American opened a second campus in Brownsville, which later became an independent institution of The University of Texas System in 1991. Over the years, the missions and the identities of these great institutions have continually evolved to serve the communities of the Rio Grande Valley.

Now, the evolution and connection between these two institutions is coming full circle as UT Brownsville and UT Pan American are being established as a single, new university and medical school, with a single, new identity—The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
