The Department of Family Medicine at the University of Virginia seeks applicants for the Chief Operating Officer position. This key administrative position reports dually to the Chair of the Department of Family Medicine as well as the School of Medicine Chief Operating Officer, and is responsible for directing and managing the administrative, financial, research, education, and some clinical operations of the department in support of advancing the department and School of Medicine’s research, educational, and clinical missions. The department COO is expected to function as the trusted “business” partner for the department chair and to work collaboratively with department faculty to address operational concerns and resolve issues. Working in concert with the department chair and with the approval of the department chair, the department COO must align the department’s financial and administrative policies and procedures with School of Medicine, University of Virginia Health System, University Physicians Group (UPG), and the University of Virginia objectives by establishing systems to ensure compliance. The department COO is responsible for keeping the department chair informed in regards to changes in practice and policies within the School of Medicine, UPG, and University. Working closely with the chair, the department COO develops and implements strategic plans and initiatives for the department.

In addition, the department COO is expected to maintain effective professional relationships and work cooperatively with School of Medicine, UPG, Health System, University Foundation, and University partners.

This is a restricted position contingent upon the continuation of funding. The position will remain open until filled.

  • Establish and maintain system of accounting and billing and plan patient flow through the clinic.
  • Develop and maintain a marketing program designed to provide optimal medical services.
  • Coordinate purchasing, maintenance, and renovation activities for the division. Administer a program of property management and accountability.
  • Determine fiscal requirements, make projections, and prepare divisional budgets. Monitor, verify and reconcile, expenditure of budgeted funds.
  • Prepare financial statements reflecting status of programs and activities.
  • Serve as divisional liaison with administrative and professional personnel concerning University policies and procedures, personnel administration, grant administration, and budgetary preparation and control.
  • Supervise and coordinate work of designated employees.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: Bachelor's degree in business, healthcare administration, or a related field is required; Master of Business Administration or Health Administration is preferred. 

Experience: At least five years of direct administrative experience in academic medicine is required, as is supervisory experience.
