African-American Religions Lecturer (Part-Time)

The Lake Forest College Religion Department has an opening to teach a course on African-American religions during the spring 2020 semester. This course meets on Mondays and Wednesdays, 2:30-3:50 p.m.

African American Religions (RELG 237) explores the rich diversity of African American religions from the colonial period to the present. Attention will be given to key figures, institutional expressions as well as significant movements in North America, the Caribbean and broader Black Atlantic. Major themes include African traditions in American religions, slavery and religion, redemptive suffering, sacred music, social protest, Black Nationalism, African American women and religion, religion in hip hop and secularity in black religious literature. Students will learn about the ways these themes have often served both as unique contributions to and critiques of America’s political establishment and social landscape. No prerequisites. (Cross-listed with African-American Studies and American Studies)

Candidates must have teaching experience (full responsibility for design, instruction and grading). Minimum degree required is a Masters degree in a relevant academic field with substantial work toward a Ph.D. The Religion Department seeks applicants committed to undergraduate teaching who can demonstrate success in their efforts to date. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis until the position is filled.

Located in the Chicago metropolitan area, Lake Forest College is a private, residential liberal arts college with 1600 students from over 40 states and over 70 nations. The College is a short walk from the Metra station, making access from Chicago and Evanston relatively easy.

Salaries for adjunct faculty are competitive. Lake Forest College embraces diversity and encourages applications from women, members of historically underrepresented groups, veterans, and individuals with disabilities.

Candidates should submit a curriculum vitae plus a letter of recommendation that evaluates their teaching to Cathy Benton, Chair, Religion Department, Lake Forest College, benton@lakeforest.edu. Finalists will be expected to submit an official graduate institution transcript.
