The Office for Undergraduate Research (OUR) was established in 1999 to expand opportunities for undergraduates at UNC-Chapel Hill to engage in research, mentored scholarship, and creative expression. The OUR mission is to facilitate and enrich undergraduate research opportunities at Carolina so that research can become a distinctive feature of the undergraduate experience for all students at UNC-Chapel Hill.

The OUR Associate Director for Student Engagement has the primary responsibility of developing undergraduate research opportunities and activities, and engaging students and faculty in the University’s undergraduate research mission. This function involves identifying and evaluating best practices for communication and outreach strategies to promote knowledge of and participation in research-related student programming. Additionally, this position provides critical roles in advising undergraduate research groups and individual students as they enter the research community. This position reports to the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Research. Specific responsibilities include:

- Developing programming associated with OUR student activities including the Fall Welcome Event, Celebration of Undergraduate Research, and University Research Week
- Advising undergraduate students via management of the Excelerated Research Program, Student Ambassador program, Peer Advisor program, and orientations for incoming undergraduates
- Assisting the Associate Dean with planning a 1-credit course designed to expose students to research opportunities outside the academic setting
- Managing the comprehensive OUR communication and outreach plan
o Engagement and outreach to promote programming and enhance participation and quality
o Evaluation of the efficacy of OUR engagement and outreach efforts
o Oversight of OUR website design/maintenance and social media presence
- Collaborating with OUR staff to promote the OUR mission
- Other duties as assigned by the Associate Dean

Educational Requirements

Master’s degree in a field relevant to communications or higher education with a minimum of 2 years of experience in a related position; or a PhD in a field relevant to communications or higher education.

Qualifications and Experience

Qualified candidates should have a strong interest in promoting undergraduate research; experience developing and managing multiple forms of communication; and the ability to work with diverse groups of students, faculty, and administrators at a research university. Additionally, qualified candidates should have significant experience in the following key areas:
- Knowledge of and experience with communication and outreach strategies
- Engaging and supporting students in a higher education environment
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to interact with current and prospective students from diverse backgrounds and with varying experiences
- Partnering skills and the ability to build relationships with faculty, staff, and other units on campus
- Experience with project management and developing metrics to assess success
- Ability to think creatively and apply this creativity to various activities, such as outreach, marketing materials, and program and event design/development
- Experience managing websites is preferred
- Experience conducting research is preferred but not required
