The University of Miami, UMHC/SCCC - Site Disease - Thyroid, has an exciting opportunity for a Nurse Specialist. The Nurse Specialist will serve as main point of contact for patients, families and referring physician.

  • Reviews, patients’ medical records, test results and any other documentation required for the clinic

  • Help patients prepare a list of questions and concerns to raise with their physicians prior to office visits
  • Ensure referrals to supportive care and support services are made in a timely way; facilitate scheduling and monitor patients to ensure follow-through
  • Greet patients on the day of clinic and provide them with personalized schedule
  • Conduct patient  assessments on the day of clinic
  • Help to explain treatment recommendations to patients and families, answer questions
  • Round on patients (inpatient and outpatient) to provide support, identify unmet needs
  • Work with referring physicians to understand their preferences for communication about patients’ test results, treatment progress and manage those communications
  • Communicates with physicians as needed by phone, emails or in person for new patient referrals and scheduling priorities.
  • Help eligible patient’s access appropriate clinical trials
  • Track individual patients’ progress along care continuum; identify potential bottlenecks and perform appropriate interventions
  • Work with oncology administrator to identify key timeliness of care metrics (e.g. time from mammogram to biopsy, time from biopsy to surgical consult)
  • Identify bottlenecks in the patient pathway and gaps in care; propose process improvement measures to address them
  • Communicates with other SDG Nurse Coordinators to coordinate patient care activities.
  • Participate with other members of the healthcare team to provide patients with psychosocial support,  cancer rehab, pain management and integrative medicine
  • Refers patients to community support groups/services like the leukemia/lymphoma society and the American cancer society, etc
  • Educate patients about survivorship, set expectations for the post-treatment transition, remain available to patients and families for questions for the completion of treatment
  • Ensures compliance with all facility policies and procedures and all HIPPA, ACHA, JCAHO, OSHA standards and regulations

Minimum Qualifications (Essential Requirements):

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing required, current/valid Florida RN license required, CPR/BLS certification required,
  • One year previous nursing experience in oncology required.
  • Managerial/supervisory/ Charge experience required. Excellent English verbal/ written skills are necessary and computer skills. OCN preferred.
