Reporting to the Head of Digital Production, the Audio/Video (A/V) Media Manager oversees the digitization of analog audio and video materials and the processing of born digital audio and video content, with a focus on the Libraries’ distinctive collections. The A/V Media Manager contributes to and implements policies and procedures for audio and video capture, preservation, and access; tracks workflows; interprets and applies standards for audio and video production; performs quality control; ingests audio and video content into preservation and access systems; coordinates the outsourcing of projects to digitization service providers, assists in monitoring project budgets; and works closely with curators and the Libraries’ digital team to plan and carry out projects.  

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Performance:

  • Manages digitization of analog audio and video materials in the Libraries’ distinctive collections, including client requests and internal projects, ensuring that deadlines are met.
  • Performs digital capture and preservation of audio and video materials using legacy equipment, with responsibility for the setup, maintenance, and operation of legacy players. 
  • Manages workflows for processing, preserving, and providing access to born digital audio and video materials, including oral histories.
  • Serves as a liaison with curators, preservation staff, and digitization vendors on outsourcing A/V digitization.
  • Participates in the development, evaluation, and implementation of policies, standards, goals, procedures, and workflows for A/V materials in cooperation with the distinctive collections units, Discovery & Metadata Services, Preservation, and necessary stakeholders.
  • Serves as a local authority regarding standards for audio and video, keeping abreast of relevant developments and best practices.  Makes recommendations for digital archiving and preservation policies and procedures for A/V material based on best practices.
  • Oversees and develops documentation, training, and quality control procedures for A/V digitization processes and projects.
  • Coordinates the ingest of A/V material into Kaltura and other access platforms.
  • Performs digital asset management activities for the long-term preservation of digital files.
  • Works as a member of the Digital Production Department to plan and carry out projects.
  • Supervises staff and students in A/V digitization projects as needed.
  • Works with Systems Administration & Support, campus IT, and others to ensure optimal functioning of equipment, hardware, software, and server space.

Service:

  • Serves on/participates in University and Library committees, task forces, and teams as appropriate.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Communication, Media Studies, Information Sciences, or an equivalent combination of education and related work experience.
  • Two years’ experience working with audio and video media in an academic digital library environment.
  • Awareness of current issues and trends in the digitization of audio and video materials.
  • Experience in digitizing and processing audio and video formats.
  • Proficiency using Macintosh and Windows-based platforms.
  • Experience working with archival and/or special collections materials in an academic or research environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work quickly and accurately in a service and production-oriented environment, and adapt to changing trends.
  • Ability to plan and implement routines and processes that ensure optimum production, and monitor projects through to completion in a cost-effective manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively with diverse constituents.
  • Effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously, meet deadlines, and establish appropriate priorities, as driven by operational, developmental, and managerial needs.

Highly desirable:

  • Supervisory experience, especially the ability to provide leadership to staff with highly technical duties in a collegial manner in a constantly changing environment.
  • Experience in teaching and training digital technologies as it related to training staff.
