About the Bard Early Colleges

Through a tuition-free, engaging college program in the liberal arts and sciences with robust supports, the Bard Early Colleges help high school students, particularly those at risk of not completing postsecondary education, access, afford, and complete college prepared to contribute to the workforce and civic life. Students are taught by college faculty in seminar classes; they receive up to 60 college credits and an associate in arts (A.A.) degree from Bard College, concurrently with a high school diploma. The Bard Early Colleges begin preparing students for college work as early as the 9th grade and offer ongoing guidance and academic supports. Now in its second decade, the Bard Early College network serves over 2,850 students in five states. Since 2003, Bard College has awarded more than 3,000 A.A. degrees to its early college students.

Bard High School Early College DC (Bard DC), a partnership between Bard College and District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS), invites applications for full-time school counselor to join the student support team beginning in August 2019.

Position Duties

• Provide one-on-one and group guidance to students to support them throughout their time at Bard;
• Identify, develop, and implement intervention strategies for socially, emotionally, and academic at-risk populations with integrated approaches using all available resources and allies, including parents, faculty, and community agencies and services for individual and school-wide needs;
• Work with students individually to identify necessary supports in the classroom, community, and throughout the early college experience;
• Work with community and other nonprofit organizations in DC to connect students with wrap-around services;
• Coordinate services for students with school-based clinical staff;
• Work closely with faculty and the administration to monitor and support students who are struggling;
• Work with the Dean of Students to develop advisory lesson plans and support implementation;
• Work with the Dean of Students to align the School Counseling team to American School Counselor Association (ASCA) standards and working towards achieving Recognized ASCA Model Program status
• Support the Dean of Studies in student scheduling;
• Conduct other administrative duties as needed.

• M.S.W., L.C.S.W., M.S., or M.A. in fields of Applied Psychology or Related Field; Master’s degree and certification in School Counseling preferred.
• Experience successfully promoting the psycho-social and academic development of urban student populations;
• Experience with crisis management and response;
• Experience with college counseling (preferred);
• A demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and coordinate with adolescents and adult stakeholders; and
• Strong organizational skills.
