Director of Clinical Experiences

Position Summary

The Michigan State University College of Human Medicine’s Office of Academic Affairs invites applications for a position of Director of Clinical Experiences. In 2016, the College of Human Medicine (CHM) implemented an innovative new curriculum, envisioned to be responsive to the needs of students and faculty in a new technological era and a new medical landscape. This new curriculum, the Shared Discovery Curriculum, provides integrated content organized around patient complaints and concerns. It is an experience-based curriculum where medical students learn by doing.

As part of the implementation, the college has created clinical experiences starting soon after students matriculate. During the first year, students are placed in primary care settings throughout Lansing and Grand Rapids communities. This is known as the Early Clinical Experience. Second year students rotate through several different types of clinical settings including respiratory therapy, hospice and palliative care, pediatric wards, adult wards, and emergency medicine as the Middle Clinical Experience. The Late Clinical Experiences include clerkships in the primary specialties and elective rotations and occurs in the community campuses across Michigan (Marquette, Traverse City, Grand Rapids, Lansing, Flint, Midland, and Southeast Michigan). In addition to the clinical experiences, students engage in intensive study of basic sciences, epidemiology, health policy and other social sciences during the intersessions which are part of the spring semesters of both the Early and Middle Clinical Experiences. The Late Clinical Experience includes the Advanced Skills and Knowledge courses which span the entire last two years.

Reporting to the Assistant Dean for Clinical Experiences, the Director is responsible for implementation and management of the programs and policies of the CHM Clinical Experiences, including:

  • Review concerns about students (eg immunizations or behavior) including removal of students from clinical sites
  • Preparation of syllabi
  • Oversee student concern resolution, bring issues to physicianship committee for consideration, and communicate decisions to students/fellows/chiefs
  • Respond to concerns of students about course expectations or questions, concerns about course sites, engaging with Clinical Experiences directors and personnel as needed
  • Plan orientation to MCE, assist Student Affairs in planning ECE orientation as part of medical school orientation
  • Assist Assistant Dean interfacing with assessment and clinical experience directors regarding grading related items
  • Assist Assistant Dean overseeing curricular build and implementation of ECE, MCE, LCE, and intersessions
  • Provide back-up to Assistant Dean to serve as ex-officio member of curriculum committee
  • Assist Assistant Dean interfacing with other units of the College (eg Office of Student Affairs, Admissions, Academy, communities) regarding student needs
  • Assist Assistant Dean responding to queries/concerns from fellows/chiefs/faculty about broad issues, direct to appropriate personnel if needed
