DescriptionThe MGH Institute of Health Professions seeks an Executive Director of Research to assist with managing the Institute’s rapidly growing research and scholarship programs. The Director’s major responsibilities are aligned with the Institute's strategic priorities, which include advancing the Institute’s research and scholarship enterprise, supporting ongoing research operations, marketing and branding, facilitating faculty development, promoting research partnerships, and providing financial oversight. The Director will be also responsible for documenting policies and procedures, chairing research faculty meetings, and working with staff to host research and scholarship seminars and events. The ability to manage multiple projects and priorities is essential. The Director will report to the Associate Provost for Research and will represent the Associate Provost in absentia or as directed. 


Principal Duties & Responsibilities


Support and enhance the Institute’s research and scholarship enterprise (35%)

  • Develop relationships with academic researchers and serve as a resource of Institute information to academic and other partners
  • Document and evaluate research processes and policies to measure effectiveness and suggest improvements
  • Assist in creation of centers of research and scholarship excellence 
  • Identify research opportunities that are aligned with Institute’s strategic goals
  • Promote partnerships that advance research and scholarship 
  • Serve as point of contact with Partners HealthCare research services 
  • Explore ways to commercialize research innovations
  • Assist with administration of research participant databases 
  • Provide ongoing guidance and support to principal investigators
  • Provide inservices to faculty about research services support at the Institute
Coordinate faculty development activities related to research and scholarship (20%)
  • Conduct a needs assessment to identify areas for support
  • Design and support mentoring programs to expand faculty members’ research skills
  • Facilitate grant and manuscript writing groups
  • Administer selection and award of intramural grants and faculty research awards
  • Identify sources of funding to support faculty research and scholarship
Promote research and scholarship accomplishments (20%)
  • Develop and implement a communications plan
  • Work with the Office of Strategic Communication on marketing and branding
  • Assure policies and procedures on website are current and aligned with Partners HealthCare guidelines
  • Oversee social media releases for accuracy
  • Plan events to highlight faculty members’ completed work
Provide financial and research space oversight (15%)
  • Assist Senior Grants Administrator with budgets and planning
  • Participate in projecting need for research resources and space planning
  • Deliver financial reports to internal committees
  • Supervise the research staff. 
Assist with faculty and staff hiring (10%)
  • Support recruitment of faculty members
  • Contribute to the onboarding of new staff and faculty members 
Supervisory ResponsibilityWill be responsible for supervising multiple research staff.


Fiscal / Budget Responsibility Assist with the upcoming research budgets.

Working ConditionsAdministrative office and lab spaces.

Training / Time Required To Learn Job Responsibilities Institute and role orientation will take place over the first three months of the position. In addition, incumbent should attend professional and academic meetings, workshops, and seminars in order to enhance his/her knowledge and leadership skills in the relevant fields and disciplines.


QualificationsEducation & Experience Qualifications 
  • PhD or ScD in health or rehabilitation science related field
  • Experience with federal research funding 
  • Record of peer-reviewed publications
  • Advanced computer skills, particularly with statistical applications

The successful candidate will have outstanding organizational skills, oral and written communication skills; the ability to work collaboratively, effectively, and professionally with leadership, faculty, staff, and external partners; a demonstrated ability to make independent administrative decisions; a demonstrated ability to exercise discretion in confidential matters; and a proactive approach to work that includes continually seeking ways to improve administrative procedures.
Technical Skills- Strong computer skills and proficient in Microsoft office programs (excel, word, access, PowerPoint).
