Overview

San Diego State University (SDSU) is seeking an innovative and energetic academic leader to serve as Associate Dean of the College of Professional and International Education within the College of Extended Studies (CES), with an expected start date of (no later than) June 1, 2019.

Position Information

This position is in the Management Personnel Plan (Administrator III) and earns management benefits including medical, dental, vision, $100,000 life insurance plan, and the CalPERS pension plan. This is a full-time, benefits eligible, at will position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and not eligible for overtime compensation.

The mission of CES is “To provide innovative education and training programs that enhance careers and transform lives and organizations across the globe.” CES serves as a principal University liaison with the greater San Diego community and provides a wide variety of degree and certificate programs as well as credit and noncredit educational experiences designed to fit the needs and expectations of working adults and other non-traditional learners.

CES has been a leader in continuing education for more than 40 years, reaching out to San Diego, the nation, and the world with a wide variety of lifelong learning opportunities. The college has more than 50 certificate programs for career advancement, as well as online programs ranging from single courses, to certificate programs and degrees. CES offers Master’s degree programs in business administration, counseling, education, health, hospitality and tourism, science, and sports management. CES also provides high courses for students who are age 50 and better through the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at SDSU. Our American Language Institute has a world-renowned ESL instruction, and CES also operates SDSU’s Open University program that provides access to SDSU courses to everyone in the community.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have an advanced degree in social science, education, business, law, or humanities, plus significant experience in higher education, entrepreneurial public service, in a not for profit organization or in the private sector. Experience in strategic planning, demonstrated ability to lead a self-sustaining organization in higher education, including working with corporate entities or state workforce organizations. They will also possess a history of developing new programs, innovative business and partnership models and possess the ability to generate enthusiasm for achieving these goals, and a strong record of institutional leadership, collaboration, and the ability to deliver innovative solutions to the College. They will have a demonstrated ability in establishing effective working relationships with faculty, government, community and business leaders.

The candidate should have deep skills in fiscal analysis, planning and administration of a multi-million dollar budget, thorough knowledge of the management and operation of academic and professional programs. The candidate should have a comprehensive knowledge of the process involved in developing and implementing continuing education programs (i.e., pedagogy, instructor selection, instructional design). The candidate shall provide evidence of success in advancing diversity and working effectively in a multicultural campus and community setting, and demonstrate the capacity to expand the College’s international interests. Candidates should demonstrate expertise in long-term strategic planning and articulation of a vision that will lead the College to continued growth and world-class excellence. The successful candidate will be an effective communicator and a consensus builder, with the capacity to promote collegiality among staff, students, and the community.

Preferred Qualifications and Specialized Skills

An earned doctorate. Knowledge of the San Diego county region, its successes, challenges and potential for development. Extensive administrative experience working with faculty in a College setting or a similar administrative division or unit. Experience in the design and marketing of courses for adult or international students. Multilingual. Experience with Career Services. Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills, capable of promoting collegiality and building consensus.
