About the College/Unit/DepartmentThe University of Georgia’s Skidaway Institute of Oceanography (SkIO) is a multidisciplinary research institution located on a 700 acre campus on Skidaway Island. The Institute’s primary goals are to further understanding of marine and environmental sciences, conduct leading edge research on marine and coastal systems, and train tomorrow’s scientists. Our campus is also a host to Georgia Southern University’s Applied Coastal Research Lab, NOAA Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary, The University of Georgia’s Marine Education Center and Aquarium, and The Nature Conservancy.
Skidaway Institute of Oceanography is home to the R/V Savannah. The R/V Savannah is operated by the Institute and is a member of the University National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS) fleet.

Preferred QualificationsPosition SummaryThis position is responsible for the operation and maintenance of boats, vessels, and marine equipment. Position reports to the master of the research vessel, and ensures the safe mechanical operations of the vessel in order to perform required scientific research. Work is performed under general direction of the master of the research vessel and is reviewed through observation and inspection.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or CompetenciesKnowledge of marine maintenance and repair
Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of diesel and gas engines, pumps, compressors, generators, and auxiliary equipment common to marine vessels
Operation and maintenance experience on commercial, military, private or research vessels
STCW Certificate required – USCG Entry Level Deck License preferred
Designated Duty Engineer, preferred (DDE)
Physical DemandsLift and carry a minimum of 70 pounds repeatedly throughout the work day.
Work at sea from periods of several days to several weeks.
