The Veterinary Service Center (VSC) at Stanford University provides Laboratory Animal Care and operates within the Department of Comparative Medicine. We are fully accredited by the Association for Accreditation and Assessment of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC). Our vision is to pioneer in laboratory animal care, driving research innovations from bench to bedside.

The Veterinary Service Center within the Department of Comparative Medicine is seeking a Property Control Assistant Lead. The VSC has implemented a system for managing the process of tracking and counting all of the animals used in research at Stanford. This system will use barcoding and RFID technologies to identify animals and count cages for billing. Reporting to the Applications Manager, the Property Control Assistant Lead will have the responsibility for conducting the census of all animals using the census system.

Duties include:
  • Conduct census using hand held scanners or other equipment in all animal facilities ensuring it is done accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Identify, classify and process census exceptions to ensure resolution in a timely manner. Works with the Applications Manager, Team Members, Husbandry Staff and Researchers to resolve complex issues.
  • Working with Husbandry staff and laboratory personnel, ensures all cages are properly labeled and housed in the correct location.
  • Runs reports for Husbandry and Administrative staff to support other VSC activities including cage preparation, animal receipt and animal transfers.
  • Maintains accurate and complete documentation of activities.
  • Supports all AnimalTrax and Vemar users (internal and external) by answering all their questions, in person, by email, phone or our ticket system.
  • Troubleshoots software systems and works with vendors to resolve problems.
  • Helps test new releases of AnimalTrax and other software used.
  • Scheduling his/her own assigned daily work.

Qualifications:

Required:
  • Must be able to schedule and prioritize work for themselves.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Must possess excellent organizational skills with the ability to accomplish tasks in a rapidly changing, fast-paced environment.
  • Must have the ability to take initiative to complete duties proactively, and work under varying deadlines.

  • Must possess Strong computer skills with demonstrated ability to work with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and different types of browsers.
  • Experience with running reports and analyzing the data.
  • Must be able to read, write, understand, communicate and follow written and oral instructions provided in English.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with a diverse population.
  • Must be detail oriented, but must also be able to see the big picture.

Desired:
  • At least one year of experience with using and supporting web-based software, like tracking software and/or inventory management.
  • At least one year of experience with AnimalTrax and/or Vemar.
  • Experience with a ticket system, preferably with ServiceNow.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Feel comfortable working in the dark, as some employees are assigned to animal rooms that require the animals to be on a reversed light cycle rooms.
  • Feel comfortable working with several software applications at the same time.
  • Experience with testing new releases of software.
  • Experience with solving basic computer issues is preferred.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (Required):
  • High School diploma or a combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Must have at least one years of experience working in an animal care facility.

CERTIFICATIONS & LICENSES (Required):
  • Must be able to drive and provide a valid driver's license.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
  • Frequently perform desk-based computer tasks, use a telephone, sit and use light/fine grasping.
  • Occasionally stand, walk and write by hand, lift, carry, push, and pull objects weighing 15 pounds or less.
  • Must be able to follow all procedures for working in secure or limited access areas including wearing proper clothing or disinfecting equipment according to standard operating procedures.
  • Must be able to stand/walk for extended periods while conducting the census.
