Bowdoin College seeks a thoughtful, inventive and collaborative individual to lead the Employer Relations team. The Director will join Bowdoin at a time of tremendous opportunity. Driven by the conviction that it is the obligation of the College to ensure the post-graduate success of all students, Bowdoin has identified career planning as a top institutional priority. The College is seeking to expand the design and delivery of career planning programs and services, enhancing its proactive, holistic approach that favors early and systemic engagement; provides students with the opportunity to explore the world of work and the full range of internship, graduate study and career possibilities available to them; and offers student-centered and readily accessible resources that meet the needs of students of all financial backgrounds at every stage of their Bowdoin experience. The Director will lead the externally-facing work of a Career Planning team that aims to be without peer among small liberal arts colleges nationwide. This position reports to the Executive Director of Career Planning.Housed in the Division of Student Affairs, Career Planning is responsible for all aspects of career development, from advising on career and graduate study to fostering employer and alumni connections that lead to internships and jobs. The strength of Career Planning lies in the supportive, individualized advising and programming it provides to students over four years of study; the real-world expertise of staff; deep and broad connections to alumni, parents and employers; and the post-graduate success of students who pursue traditional and non-traditional career paths as varied as arts, communications, consulting, finance, education, law, policy, marketing, medicine, science, engineering, advocacy, research, and technology, among others.

Bachelor's degree required; relevant master's degree preferred.

Relationship developer:
The ability to listen deeply and develop a thoughtful understanding of the aims of employers and alumni engaged with Bowdoin. Deft at finding the right methods (information session, on-campus recruiting, virtual recruiting, less formal interactions) that meet both employer interests and student needs.

Planning and operational acumen:
The ability to manage high volume of events and engagements efficiently.

Thoughtful management of direct reports: The ability to scope work across weeks and months and set clear goals with two talented team members who report directly to the role. An authentic investment in support, problem-solving, and professional growth of those who report to them.

Student-centered:
Driven by what is best for students and a deep regard for students' agency in determining their future, and in their learning.

Commitment to equity:
Has developed or worked with initiatives that serve underrepresented groups.

Collaboration and a great sense of humor: This function has three primary constituencies to support: students (always first), alumni and employers, and colleagues, particularly sector-focused career advisors. The candidate will be versed in balancing the needs of constituencies and be customer-service oriented and collaborative, across all three of these constituencies.

Vision, creativity and imagination:
Able to see trends in the world of professional work and undergraduate hiring and plan for five years from now as well as today. Capable of gauging the impact of existing programming, inventive in the creation of new ways to engage a larger set of employers and alumni that reflect the career interests of students. Creative in the search for ways to connect the external-facing work to the department's largest new initiatives led by others on the team (related to funded internships and the development of student's practical skills for job-readiness and for life).

Generally, 8:30 am – 5:00 pm while students are on campus with some night and weekend hours especially during peak periods of semester (September-October and January-February). This is a .92 FTE with benefits including vacation time. This is an exempt position requiring the time commitment necessary to successfully complete job requirements.
