Reporting to the Associate Provost, the Director of Fellowships serves as the locus for all graduate fellowships opportunities at the university. The Director chairs the Graduate Fellowships Committee, organizes the faculty liaisons for different major fellowships, leads fellowship recruitment efforts, and manages marketing efforts. The Director will actively engage with students and faculty to encourage and support a “culture of fellowships” that views the fellowship-seeking process as an ongoing learning experience for our students, cultivating self-reflection, discernment, and personal and professional development.

STATUS:  Full-Time, 12 Month, With Benefits
WORK HOURS:   8:30-4:30 Monday-Friday with occasional evening and weekend hours
FLSA:  Non-Exempt
MINIMUM PAY: $68,704. Salary commensurate with experience.

ESSENTIAL AND RELATED FUNCTIONS:

  • Directs a robust undergraduate fellowships program, advising and directing students throughout the fellowships cultivation and application process. Oversees the writing of institutional letters of endorsement.
  • Chairs the Graduate Fellowships Committee, a ten-member faculty committee that “helps disseminate information on fellowship opportunities, recruits students on an on-going basis to apply for fellowships, assists with mock interviews for finalists, and selects nominees for Fulbright, Luce, and other scholarship programs.”
  • Actively seeks new fellowship opportunities for W&L students. Is an active member of the National Association of Fellowship Advisors (NAFA). Represents the University at regional and national conferences, professional associations, and occasional site visits.
  • Develops wide-ranging methods for recruitment of students ensuring participation from a diverse population of students from varied disciplines. Partners with faculty and the Office of Career and Professional Development to encourage and support students in the fellowship and post-graduation planning and preparation process.
  • Continues to grow a robust “culture of fellowships” at W&L through visibility on-campus and dedication as a resource. Promotes and publicizes student fellowship success.
  • Works closely with the Center for Academic Resources and Pedagogical Excellence (CARPE: our center for teaching and learning) to infuse fellowships preparation into the undergraduate culture, including technical support such as recording mock interviews and drafting fellowship applications.
  • Develops relevant workshops, brings speakers to campus, and encourages participation in webinars and information sessions.
  • Oversees Fellowships marketing efforts and works with University Communications to publicize Fellowships outcomes. Manages the fellowships website (http://fellowships.wlu.edu).
  • Depending on candidate credentials, the Fellowships Director may teach occasionally and advise students. Applicants with a terminal degree and teaching experience will have the opportunity to teach 1-2 courses per year, likely in courses that attract first-year students, and may be eligible for a courtesy appointment, without tenure, in a relevant academic department. Advising first-year students will also be welcome.
  • Works collaboratively with Academic Affairs leadership (Provost and Deans) and Student Affairs leadership to promote the teaching and learning mission of the university.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Takes personal responsibility for seeing tasks and assignments through to completion. Sets high standards for work/deadlines and demonstrates a drive to deliver quality work within the allotted time.

Listens carefully, encourages and accepts other points of view. Seeks work group input and encourages their participation and involvement. Stays informed on events, trends and other developments in own field of work (e.g., regulations, policies, standards and practices).

QUALIFICATIONS:

Advanced degree/doctorate in a disciplinary field preferred. At least five years of significant professional experience in an academic setting or a combination of experience and education from which a similar skill set would be derived. Must have strong organizational skills, including the ability to manage multiple initiatives simultaneously, meet multiple deadlines, set priorities and work both independently and as part of a creative team. Excellent communication skills are required; must have highly developed interpersonal and advising skills. Strong understanding of higher education policy and procedures and ability to network extensively with university stakeholders such as students, alumni, organizations, faculty and staff. Exceptional editorial and writing skills. Familiarity with a range of database, spreadsheet, word processing, and web design software packages.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Fingering: Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with whole hand or arm as in handling.
  • Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
  • Repetitive motions: Making substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • The worker is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions (as in typical office or administrative work).
  • Sedentary work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time.
