Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):

Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher).  Three (3) years of full-time programming experience.  Solid understanding and experience in the use of relational databases.  Prior experience in Structured Query Language (SQL). Working with complex data sets.

Preferred Qualifications:  

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field (foreign equivalent or higher). Experience using Raiser’s Edge.  Experience with HTML, Java or Content Management System. Experience with visualization/analysis software.  Experience working in higher education and/or academic health sciences center. Experience working with financial data.


Brief Description of Duties:

The Data Analyst is a professional and technical position that is passionate about data, keen to learn new methods to better report, access and manipulate data, and who thinks creatively about ways to expand current data management practices.  The ideal data analyst will have experience working with large databases; designing developing, and enhancing technology solutions aimed at improving business processes and data management.

 

The selected candidate should have the ability to think creatively and independently to solve problems and work with advancement staff in organizing data, creating/managing reports, and data analysis.  They will use data to aid business decisions supporting fundraising goals and resource deployment. The incumbent will be responsible for creating custom reports and data visualizations based on Advancement and SBF Business office needs and facilitate detailed data reviews and analysis. A successful candidate will have prior experience in a large, complex organization and fast paced environment, managing multiple projects, and deadlines.

Data Analysis:

Provide program expertise to management to use in the evaluation of the Raiser's Edge (RE) data functionality and capability.  Become fluent in all aspects of data coding, storage, reporting, extraction, sharing, and importing within RE. Look for ways to improve the use and overall integrity of the University constituent database including the evaluation of third party tools/utilities.  Provide data analysis to a wide range of data sets to enable Advancement and the University better understand the constituent data and improve donor/alumni outreach.

- Analyzes data and summarizes performance using summary statistical procedures.

- Develops and analyzes business performance reports and provides notations of performance deviations and anomalies.

- Create standard reports and data visualizations for the user community.  

- Create and maintain complicated query selections and segmentations in support of user requests and management needs.

- Create custom reports using Tableau and other programs/utilities when needing more complex reports that are unavailable in RE.

- Develop methodologies for using data analytics tools; manage reporting, visualizations, dashboards and statistical graphs to illustrate findings.

- Test and debug utilities and reports to assure performance to specifications.

- Create and maintain data and system documentation as needed.

- Participate and provide technical assistance in special projects within Advancement and the Stony Brook Foundation.

- Engage and learn business user needs in order to best support the fundraising, alumni relations and annual giving programs

Data Management and Integrity:

Ability to integrate multiple systems, data sets, query databases and perform statistical analysis; linking multiple/distinctive data set to provide new insights.  Initiate and develop programs to coordinate the electronic selection and verification of data managed within the central data management system, Raiser's Edge; currently estimated at over 310,000 records.  

- Regularly execute data cleansing routines and analyze results to fix problems on an immediate and go-forward basis.

- Develop reports and data validation process around key data metrics and business processes.

- Proactively identify opportunities for process and reporting efficiencies.

- Respond to ad-hoc requests from internal and external customers.

- Create and modify reports using Microsoft Excel, Microsoft SQL and other data aggregating tools.

- Collaborate with others to understand data opportunities, needs and drive data quality improvement.

Operations Support:

Work with Advancement staff to analyze and gather requirements to meet business needs and objectives, sharing the results appropriately.  Report data needs to be analyzed to predict if the best tools are being used. Use Lumniate, Google Analytics, and any other data analysis tools to enhance the data understanding and needs.

- Automate processes to streamline work and minimize errors.

- Monitor data flow and seek out bad or misaligned data throughout RE and its associated systems.

- Monitor the use of the data through our Advancement partners (Annual Fund, Alumni Relations, etc…) and make recommendations for improvements and enhancements.

Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.


Special Notes:

This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption. Night and Weekend work may be required.
