The North Carolina Botanical Garden is a conservation garden and environmental education center consisting of approximately 1,100 acres, including native plant habitat gardens, nature trails and preserves, classrooms, and meeting facilities. NCBG’s mission is "To inspire understanding, appreciation, and conservation of plants and to advance a sustainable relationship between people and nature.” The Garden is a national leader in southeastern native plants and environmental issues, including sustainable practices in horticulture and conservation.

The Nature Camp Counselor works under the supervision of Garden Educators to help prepare for and deliver high-quality, hands-on, place-based summer camps designed to connect kids to plants and nature and promote a love for science learning. Camp hours are Monday-Friday, and vary 8:15am–12:30pm and 8:15am–5:00 pm. Camps serve children PreK through 5th grade. Position also assists with maintaining indoor and outdoor learning spaces in the children’s garden and family discovery room.

Primary Duties:
• Work alongside Garden Educators to facilitate a wide variety of indoor/outdoor natural science learning, including hands-on activities, outdoor exploration, group games, stories, and nature crafts
• Create a safe, fun learning environment and provide exceptional supervision of children
• Assist with camp paperwork, setup and breakdown of program materials, and clean and maintain program spaces
• Support and serve as a role model for teen volunteer Counselors-in-Training (CIT)
• Assist with daily upkeep of children’s garden and family discovery room
• Interact professionally and maintain excellent rapport with Garden staff, campers, and parents/guardians
• Other educational and administrative duties, as needed

Education and Experience

Minimum Requirements:
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

Preferred:
Undergraduate student in 2 to 4-year college program; or bachelor’s degree in relevant field (e.g. environmental science, ecology, science education, etc.); or equivalent combination of training and experience in relevant field

Essential Skills:
• Creative, energetic personality with interest in teaching children about nature and science outdoors
• Experience and passion for working with children, specifically early childhood (ages 4-7)
• Interest in gaining youth development and facilitation skills
• Experience teaching summer camps, preferred but not required
• Experience in a non-formal setting (i.e. botanic gardens, nature centers, science museums, parks), preferred but not required
• Strong interest in/knowledge of North Carolina plants, animals, and ecology
• Must be available for all scheduled camp sessions and participate in trainings and staff meetings
• Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and listening communication skills
• Self-motivated, dependable, flexible, team player
• Ability to manage multiple tasks concurrently
• Dedicated to exceptional customer service
• Proficient computer skills
• Ability to obtain CPR with AED and First Aid certification (provided upon employment)
• Valid NC driver’s license
• Criminal background check required

Special Physical and Mental Requirements

• Ability to safely lift and/or move items weighing up to 40 pounds with or without reasonable accomodations
• Ability to work outdoors in all kinds of weather conditions
• Ability to move swiftly around the building, gardens and trails, and traverse distances of up to 2 miles on uneven terrain
• Eligible to drive State owned vehicle

    Location: UNC is located in the heart of Chapel Hill, the best college town in America! It's a friendly town of about 40,000 in the geographical center of North Carolina. Chapel Hill is at the western point of the Research Triangle, an area of about one million people, comprised of Chapel Hill, the cities of Durham and Raleigh, and the Research Triangle Park, home of many corporate offices and scientific research centers.     Carolina Computing Initiative: Beginning with the freshman class of 2000, undergraduates must purchase laptop computers. The University has arranged for IBM to offer computers at excellent prices.
