Department PPPL Plasma Science and Techno
Category Research and Laboratory
Full-Time / Part-Time Full-Time
Application Deadline

Overview

The successful candidate will play a lead role in design, implementation, and commissioning of two novel x-ray diagnostics on the WEST tokamak: a Multi-Energy X-Ray Array and a Compact X-Ray Imaging Spectrometer. The successful candidate will utilize the diagnostics to participate in the WEST research program, including studying particle and thermal transport and the behavior of energetic electrons in lower hybrid current drive experiments. The Multi-Energy X-Ray Array will have a tangential view to allow two-dimensional measurements of the electron temperature and impurity content. WEST is a long pulse tokamak with all tungsten plasma facing components with a mission of developing and understanding the physics of long pulse plasma scenarios that are relevant to ITER and future reactors.

Responsibilities

In addition to participating in design and implementation of the Multi-Energy X-Ray Array and a Compact X-Ray Imaging Spectrometer, the successful candidate will be responsible for calibration and operation of these diagnostics and for data analysis. The candidate will be expected to participate in the WEST research program, including proposing and executing experiments as well as participating in experiments led by other members of the WEST team. The candidate will have primary responsibility for development of the required data analysis codes. The candidate may work with one or more PhD students to accomplish these goals. It is expected that the candidate will publish the results of their work in refereed journals and present it at major conferences. The candidate will be based primarily on site at the WEST facility located at the CEA Laboratory in Cadarache, France, with some travel to PPPL.

Qualifications

Applicants should have a PhD in plasma physics or related field. Preference will be given to candidates with experimental experience working on fusion experiments and those with experience in plasma diagnostics and x-ray measurements. Experience in development of data analysis codes and skill in modern programing techniques is highly desirable.
