Position Summary:

The Instructor will ordinarily teach one section each semester of Legal Research and Writing and one section each semester of Legal Analysis for the Bar Exam. In his discretion, the Dean may substitute one section of either course for the other (i.e., the Instructor may be assigned two sections of LRW or two sections of the LAB class in a given semester).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Teach one or two sections of Legal Research and Writing (LRW) per semester, which includes providing classroom instruction, timely written feedback on assignments, and individual academic counseling on progress towards course learning objectives.
  • In lieu of one or more of the sections of LRW, teach one or two sections of either Applied Legal Analysis or Legal Analysis for the Bar per semester, which includes providing classroom instruction, timely written feedback on student assignments, and individual academic counseling on bar exam readiness.
  • Refine and/or develop and implement programming to assist students in preparing for academic success while in law school and passing the state bar exam after graduation.
  • Work closely with students in both the legal research and writing, academic success, and bar preparation programs, while maintaining professionalism and appropriate demeanor that encourages learning.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an ABA-accredited U.S. law school required.
  • At least two years’ experience as a licensed attorney in the practice of law, which experience must have involved the preparation and editing of high-quality legal work product, is preferred.
  • Proficient in the use of computer for word processing and electronic communication. Ability to learn and adapt quickly to new software.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of diversity and inclusion best practices.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • At least two years’ experience teaching legal research and writing in an ABA-accredited law school.
  • Any combination of education, training or experience that provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the essential functions of the position. Law degree required.
  • Active membership (or ability to become a member within 6 months of hire) in the Oregon State Bar.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Knowledge of or enthusiasm to learn about preparation for, the Oregon bar exam and/or the Uniform Bar Exam.
  • A genuine enthusiasm for student success, and an ability to be empathetic towards students with academic challenges.
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality on sensitive issues.
  • Ability to work independently as well as establish and maintain harmonious relations with staff, faculty, students and professionals in the community regardless of their race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, economic status, ethnicity, job status, or other background.

TYPICAL WORK SCHEDULE:   

Regular Office Hours, typically Monday – Friday 8am to 5pm.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORKING CONDITIONS:

Typical work is performed indoors in a normal office and/or classroom environment.
