The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed) grant at North Carolina State University, Steps to Health, facilitates the delivery of nutrition education programs to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients and those eligible for SNAP across North Carolina.

Essential Job Duties

The Extension Assistant position will be an integral part of the Steps to Health program, Department of Agricultural and Human Sciences professional faculty and staff at North Carolina State University. This position interfaces with statewide county and district Cooperative Extension staff and volunteers as well as the other state and community-based agency/organization professionals and volunteers.

This position is responsible for SNAP-Ed implementation, educating and inspiring limited resource North Carolinian’s to adopt healthy eating and physical activity behaviors through a series of nutrition education programs and initiatives targeting preschoolers through 4th grade students, adults, and families. Additionally, the Extension Assistant will work to identify opportunities for providing assistance to community partners in the area of improving their policies, systems, and environments to better support healthy eating and physical activity. This position works with the project and county team, pro-actively providing programming to their appointed counties. The home base for this position will be with the Duplin County Cooperative Extension office in Kenansville, NC with programming responsibilities in Duplin and Sampson Counties. The position works under the guidance of the Steps to Health Nutrition Programs Manager, Program Coordinator, Steps to Health Team and County Extension Director and is supervised by the Nutrition Programs Manager.

Essential job duties include:

  • Recruit limited-resource families and individuals who meet the federal eligibility guidelines for participation in SNAP-Ed.
  • Coordinate with collaborating agencies to plan and implement programs.
  • Conduct direct nutrition education programs as outlined in Steps to Health program curricula and training.
  • Facilitate the collection of appropriate demographic and evaluation data using specified tools.
  • Purchase and prepare food and supplies for program specific taste tests.
  • Track and spend within provided budgets for each program.
  • Participate in Steps to Health training.
  • With guidance from and in collaboration with Steps to Health campus staff, support partnering agencies in making positive improvements in nutrition and physical activity policies, systems, and environmental changes.
  • Travel within assigned counties and to state office.
  • Track and maintain program related paperwork such as data, inventory, and other documentation in an organized manner.

Minimum Education/Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in family and consumer sciences, human sciences, nutrition, or closely related field, with 3+ years of relevant training and/or experience.
  • Commitment to working with limited resource audiences and teaching nutrition.
Departmental Required Skills
  • Must be able support the mission and vision of the Steps to Health program.
  • Demonstrate effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and interact with a diverse population.
  • Ability to plan, implement, and market programs while handling multiple demands and set priorities.
  • Ability to network with community partners and agencies and maintain a collaborative working relationship.
  • Excellent time, resource management and program implementation skills.
  • Computer literacy, familiarity with Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to lift 10-15 lbs.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
  • Masters’s degree in family and consumer sciences, human sciences, nutrition, or closely related field.
  • Experience with County Extension system and SNAP-Ed is helpful.
  • Spanish- speaking is desirable.
Required License or Certification
  • Valid NC driver’s license.
