Albemarle, the largest city and county seat, is 42 miles northeast of Charlotte, 110 miles southwest of Raleigh, and about 70 miles south of Greensboro which places the county in what has become known as the central park region of North Carolina.

Agriculture continues to be a major factor in the local economy with an estimated value of 1.6 billion dollars.
