Duties

Responsible for developing a natural language processing application for identifying patients that meet a cohort definition using a variety of computational methods including artificial intelligence, machine learning, and ontologies for clinical data. The programmer will develop and implement NLP algorithms for encoding clinical variables and classifying patients according to phenotypes. Will work alongside members of the Clinical Research Informatics Core (CIC) as well as potentially collaborate with University of Pennsylvania students and postdocs in the Semantic Analysis of Text to Inform Clinical Action (SemAnTICA) laboratory.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related field and 1 year of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience required. Masters’ Degree in Computer Science or related field preferred.
1 year of computer programming experience required; 3 to 5 preferred
Experience with natural language processing and/or ontologies
Experience with artificial intelligence or machine learning
Experience with deep learning and data science a plus; Experience with clinical data a plus
Experience with several programming languages including Java and Python
Experience with other programming languages – JavaScript and/or Perl – a plus
Experience with Linux, Windows, Mac OS operating systems; Experience with reading/writing XML
Ability to work with a software development team using formal software development methods; work independently and apply critical thinking and sound judgment
Excellent organizational and time management skills
Ability to communicate effectively with team members
