The Career Center (TCC), a unit within the Division of Student Affairs, provides all Illinois students collaborative and innovative programs, services, and resources focused on career and professional development that educates and empowers them to become thriving professionals in the global community. The Career Center staff is committed to supporting students from all backgrounds and promoting inclusiveness on campus.

Position Summary

The Senior Assistant Director is a full-time (100%) 12-month appointment in The Career Center, a unit of Student Affairs at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

The Senior Assistant Director is a member of The Career Center’s Leadership team and specifically oversees the budget and personnel associated with the Employer and Career Connections team. The position is responsible for fostering relationships with stakeholders that provide career and experiential learning opportunities, overseeing on-campus recruiting activities, and guiding services and resources that prepare students for interviews and internship/job searches. The position contributes to campuswide employer engagement initiatives and leads implementation of Handshake@Illinois for the Illinois career services community.

Responsibilities

Leadership (25%)

  • Direct personnel and budget for the Employer and Career Connections team, which includes direct supervision of 2.5 staff members and indirect supervision of 10+ student paraprofessionals
  • Serve as a member of the Center’s Leadership team responsible for developing goals and strategies to reach objectives outlined in the Center’s strategic plan
  • Assess services and programs to determine student learning outcomes, make evidence-based decisions, and facilitate continuous improvement

Employer Relations and Campus Recruiting (25%)

  • Oversee on-campus recruiting activities and events spearheaded by The Career Center and provide guidance to campus partners that lead recruiting events
  • Direct day-to-day operation of Handshake@Illinois within the Center and lead the campuswide Handshake@Illinois Users Committee
  • Advise employers and other entities on effective recruiting strategies and development of meaningful internships and experiential learning activities that contribute to career readiness of students
  • Contribute to the coordination of employer outreach and engagement across the broader career services community at Illinois, including execution of the Hire Illini initiative

Experiential Learning and Job/Internship Preparation (20%)

  • Initiate and cultivate relationships with employers, alumni, campus partners, and community stakeholders to develop high-quality internships, experiential education opportunities, and professional connections for students
  • Develop and implement strategies in collaboration with Career Education team that effectively engages professionals in career development activities for students
  • Lead initiatives to enhance access to experiential learning opportunities with intentional focus on strategies for underrepresented students
  • Oversee programs, services, and information about preparing and searching for internships and jobs, as well as provide guidance for Mock Interview program

Direct Service to Student and Contribution to Mission and Values (30%)

  • Coach students one-on-one and in groups regarding career exploration and decision-making, preparation for graduate/professional school, and finding jobs and internships
  • Contribute to the design, creation, and maintenance of print and online resources
  • Maintain relationships with campus partners through service as a liaison to designated departments or units, and/or on committees, task forces, or work groups affiliated with The Career Center, Student Affairs, or the Campus
  • Create and deliver presentations for variety of audiences, including students, families, campus partners, and external colleagues
  • Participate in professional development activities and associations

Requirements and Qualifications

Education

Required

  • Master’s degree

Preferred

  • Master's degree in higher education administration, student affairs, counseling, human resources, or other related field

Experience

Required:

  • Three years of full-time, professional work experience that includes a variety of responsibilities related to career services or college student development
  • Experience supervising staff

Preferred:

  • Experience coordinating on-campus recruiting activities and/or employer engagement services
  • Experience coordinating experiential learning activities
  • Experience developing, delivering, and evaluating career development services, resources, and programs
  • Experience working in a collaborative, team environment
  • Experience that demonstrates understanding of the career and/or student development theory and its application to practice
  • Experience developing and fostering strategic partnerships
  • Experience using Handshake, Symplicity CSM, or other career services management platforms

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent verbal, writing, listening skills
  • Knowledge of career development theory and practice
  • Understanding of the value of experiential learning and its impact on career readiness of students
  • Strong multi-cultural competence with sensitivity to differences and the ability to engage diverse students, staff and stakeholders
  • Ability to handle multiple work priorities
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Ability to effectively use information technology, online resources, and information management tools and comfortable learning new technologies
  • Creative problem-solving skills and ability to contribute to innovation and change management

  • Ability to interpret data to inform strategic decisions

SALARY: Salary will be commensurate with experience

APPOINTMENT STATUS: Regular twelve month, 100% academic professional appointment

Academic Resources

Research

Students and scholars find the University an ideal place to conduct research. The Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology is a model for interdisciplinary research, where eighteen research groups from sixteen University departments work within and across three broadly defined themes: biological intelligence, human-computer intelligent interaction, and molecular and electronic nanostructures. The University is also home to the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA).

Undergraduate Education

The University has a fundamental commitment to undergraduate education. Nearly 28,000 undergraduate students are enrolled in nine undergraduate divisions, which together offer some 4,000 courses in more than 150 fields of study.

Undergraduate admission is highly selective. In the 2001 freshman class, students in the middle 50% had ACT scores between 25 and 30 and ranked between the 83rd and 96th percentiles of their high school graduating classes.

The University enrolls over 9,000 graduate and professional students in more than 100 disciplines. It is among the top five universities in number of earned doctorates awarded annually in the United States.

Each year about 65,000 Illinois residents participate in scores of conferences, institutes, courses, and workshops presented statewide. Research and class projects take students and professors off campus to share expertise and technical support with Illinois farmers, manufacturing firms, and businesses. In a typical year, student volunteers log more than 60,000 volunteer hours.

The Arts

A major center for the arts, the campus attracts dozens of nationally and internationally renowned artists each year to its widely acclaimed Krannert Center for the Performing Arts. The University also supports two major museums: the Krannert Art Museum and Kinkead Pavilion; and the Spurlock Museum, a museum of world history and culture. 

Other major facilities include the multipurpose Assembly Hall (16,500 seats); Memorial Stadium (70,000 seats), site of Big Ten Conference football games; and the Intramural-Physical Education Building, one of the largest recreational facilities of its kind on a university campus.
