The Methods of Identifying Neurological Delirium (MIND) Study is located within the College of Nursing at ECU, but data for the study will be collected on the MICU and SICU inpatient units at Vidant Medical Center. This study will be a trial to refine the identification of appropriate delirium biomarkers, and it may provide a foundation to incorporate EEG-based cognitive monitoring into acute care settings for critically ill older adults (>64 years) who are at highest risk of delirium. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to explore the ability of a commercially available limited-lead EEG monitor to detect evolving delirium.

Job Duties

The grant nurse will work in collaboration with the principal investigator, a PhD student, and patient care nurses to coordinate research activities and collect data (relevant nursing assessments and documentation) on patients who consent to participate within the MICU and the SICU at Vidant Medical Center. The grant nurse will document, record and assimilate accurate participant records to ensure compliance with sponsor guidelines, standard operating procedures, and regulatory agencies.

The grant nurse will be an integral part of a research team and be expected to work positively in a team environment. The ideal candidate will be self-directed and able to utilize critical thinking skills, communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and possess the ability to multi-task while prioritizing in clinical situations. The ideal candidate will be able to work with diverse populations and have technical proficiency electronic medical records and with Microsoft Office.

20% Knowledge-Technical:
The knowledge of organizational structures in healthcare centers and community resources. Conducts nursing assessments of participants including appropriate reporting. Documents, records, and assimilates accurate participant records and study records to ensure documentation compliance with sponsor guidelines, standard operating procedures (SOP) and internal and external regulatory agencies. Establishes and maintains communication with research team and hospital staff. Technical knowledge includes computer knowledge of electronic medical records and Microsoft Office.

30% Consulting/Advising:
Will be self-directed and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, possess and demonstrate leadership qualities, and be able to perform many tasks simultaneously. Will interact with patient care providers. Will care for and/or interact with patients, families, and/or and human research participants.

20% Critical Thinking:
Identifies inclusion/exclusion criteria of potential participants, reads medical charts and enters data on new subjects; if they meet enrollment requirements in the research study, enrolls subjects and instructs them in protocol procedures. Assesses and documents subjects’ clinical status through physical assessment and/or data analysis. Assists with preparation of annual or terminal summary for each research study as well as other required information for Institutional Review Board. Regularly maintains, modifies, releases or similarly affects patient records.

20% Client/Customer Service:
Will be able to prioritize clinical situations and receive pertinent information from clinical staff. Will have the ability to work as a team player with multi-disciplinary healthcare staff and diverse ICU patients and families. Will be able to deliver service in an organized, timely and methodical manner with the healthcare and research teams.

Minimum Education/Experience

Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of North Carolina and two years of experience in the area of specialization.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

Previous experience in care of hospitalized ICU patients preferred. Previous experience in data collection for research purposes. Applicant will need some flexibility in scheduling to accommodate after normal business hours and weekend hours

License or Certification Required by the Department

Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in
the State of North Carolina. Must have a valid NC driver’s license and ability to travel with means of transportation.
