DELTA’s role within the Office of the Provost is to foster the integration and support of learning technologies in NC State’s academic programs, both on the campus and at a distance. We coordinate the funding and production of all distance-based credit programs and courses for the university, and promote high-quality education by extending the reach of the faculty and collaboratively applying expertise in technology and pedagogy in an efficient, effective, and service-oriented environment.

Essential Job Duties

This position is part of the Applications Development team. This team designs, tests, installs, modifies and retrofits software used by DELTA’s internal and external clients.

The Web Developer / Data Analyst will develop and maintain web and back-end applications. These applications will primarily be in-house custom applications. They will have a focus on data management / data analysis and applications integration. They may be developed from scratch or utilize existing libraries or frameworks. Work will primarily be in PHP but some Java, Python and other languages may be utilized.

The Web Developer / Data Analyst duties will require working with the Information Architect and other team members to manage our data assets. This work will include

  • Assist in reviewing and maintaining all the DELTA data sets including data downloads from SIS/HR and other data imports
  • As approved provide access to requested DELTA data sets to other organizations on campus
  • Helping design databases / tables / views
  • Helping optimize tables, views, indexes, etc. for performance
  • Helping developing SQL in applications for efficient queries
  • Working with team members to identify / locate requested data and work with data providers to get new data feeds when needed
  • Develop web applications for data display, management and visualization to assist with implementing business processes and planning
  • Work with DELTA co-workers to gather and document requirements for modifications and new tools
  • Two initial areas of focus: DE enrollments reports and our Learning Analytics project.
  • DE enrollment – assist in developing data, tools, analysis and reports to allow DELTA to plan, predict and tally DE enrollment numbers.
  • Learning Analytics – working with big data tools assist in supporting the learning analytics project in DELTA aimed at predicting student success within a course
Other Work/Responsibilities

•Development work on other DELTA custom web applications
•Consult with or participate on DELTA Grants project teams
•Assist the Systems Support team with database server performance
•Participate in ongoing production support and tier 3 end user support
•Follow DELTA development processes including: moving code through the development stages/systems and utilizing code management systems

Minimum Education/Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field, five years of programming experience and two years of data management experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

All degrees must be received from an appropriately accredited institution.

Departmental Required Skills

Previous experience working in a LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) environment
Knowledge of current web design languages; including HTML/XHTML, CSS, and JavaScript
Previous experience with data management including SQL, data schemes and data optimization
Must be able to work in a team environment, sharing and collaborating
Must be able to work independently and manage time in an interrupt driven environment
Ability to communicate with both technical and non-technical project team members

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

Experience with web accessibility requirements and implementation
Previous experience with mobile/responsive web site development
Knowledge of Java and Python
Experience with the Hadoop stack (HDFS, MapReduce, Oozie, Pig, Hive, Sqoop, Spark), especially the Hortonworks distribution
Experience with Oracle database and MS-SQL
Experience with application integration, especially using APIs
Experience with project management or issue tracking tools like ServiceNow, JIRA, Teamwork Projects or Trello
