The Education Lab Coach works in the Betty Holden Stike Education Lab under the guidance of the Education Lab Director to support the mission, vision and goals of the Stike Education Lab and of the Watson College of Education. The Education Lab Coach provides individualized support for Watson College of Education teacher candidates as they provide one-on-one instruction to school children. The Education Lab Coach also provides contemporaneous feedback in reflective practice and cooperates with methods course professors, department faculty and staff. The Education Lab Coach manages professional development opportunities through the Education Lab for students, faculty and staff, including the extension Education Lab, public school partner schools and Virgo Preparatory Academy includes:
•Designs and delivers professional development consistent with the goals and guiding principles of the Office of Teacher Education and Outreach and the representative teacher education programs within the Watson College of Education.
•Serves as an instructional mentor, model and professional colleague within the Watson College of Education and among college faculty, staff, teacher candidates and public school partners.
•Provides leadership for the development and coordination of Educational Laboratory services in the Watson College of Education.
•Works as part of a collaborative team of faculty and staff responsible for designing and implementing support services for the teacher education programs the Education Laboratory serves.
•Develops and facilitates individualized teaching opportunities for undergraduate and graduate teacher candidates, facilitates use of instructional materials, instructional technology, models instructional strategies, and co-teaches lab classes.
•Teaches undergraduate seminars required by courses utilizing the Education Lab.
•Participates on a collaborative team of faculty and staff who conceptualize, design, support, and implement tutoring experiences delivered by preservice teachers to PreK-12 students, as part of Elementary, Middle, Secondary, Language and Literacy, and Special Education teacher education programs in the Watson College of Education.
•Evaluates lesson plans, coaching of tutors, assesses tutor and PreK-12 student performance, and conferences with tutors and parents of PreK-12 students.
•Consults with teacher candidates during lesson planning and gives direct supervision and feedback during and after instruction.
•Manages the collection of educational materials, equipment and technology and assists in administrative functions including tutoring services, acquisition of materials, record-keeping, collection of fees, and budget.
•Represents the Education Lab to a variety of internal and external groups.

Minimum Requirements

Requires knowledge of and skill in the use of effective pedagogical methods for literacy and mathematics instruction, grades PreK-12; and effective methods of clinical coaching for pre-service teachers. Ability to collaborate effectively with faculty and support personnel, interact effectively with parents of children tutored in the Education Lab, and mentor undergraduate students effectively. Attention to detail required; experience with diverse learners, instructional technology, and supervision of teacher interns.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred qualifications include demonstrated talent and innovation as a classroom teacher; strong people and leadership skills; documented experience coaching and supervising the development of educators; creativity and proficiency with technology; a detail-focused orientation and a working knowledge of current research and trends in curriculum and instructional supervision. Candidates who have mentored beginning teachers and/or pre-service teacher interns are preferred.

Primary purpose of the division, department, and/or grant

The Betty Holden Stike Education Laboratory is designed as a critical component of the undergraduate elementary, special education, middle grades, secondary and graduate MAT teacher preparation programs within the Watson College of Education. Pre-service teacher candidates practice the methods they are learning in their courses by teaching a child in a one-on-one setting. Future teachers are individually coached as they employ newly learned pedagogy in reading, writing and mathematics. Our intensive approach to preparing future teachers results in educators who are attuned to their learners and are reflective in their practice.
