Job Summary: The Staff Engineer II provides technical assistance in engineering matters, reviews outsourced construction documents, provides construction documents for in-house projects, reviews and comments on construction work, and maintains University Design Standards for the university community.

Additional Department Summary: The Mechanical Design Engineer position requires thorough knowledge of HVAC and plumbing design and engineering techniques, as well as CAD and graphics skills. The engineer shall be responsible for the creation and review of University standards relative to the discipline. This engineer shall be responsible for planning and conducting independent work requiring judgment in the evaluation, selection, application and adaptation of engineering techniques, procedures and criteria. Prepare estimates, schedules, specifications and time and material forecasts. Assess and analyze existing building systems for hydronic and dx HVAC, natural gas, potable water, and sanitary piping, and prepare design drawings and specifications for new installations and additions/modifications to these systems. Monitor mechanical work for compliance to applicable codes, accepted engineering practices and University standards. Devise new approaches to problems and employ energy savings measures and new technologies. Provide engineering support to the department relating to campus projects. Serve as the liaison for the University for design projects involving mechanical consultants. With respect to Mechanical, assist with strategic system planning, condition assessments, and capital investment projections. With respect to mechanical, review University, college, departmental purchases for impact on building systems, compliance with University standards, and overall appropriateness for application.

Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and five years of experience. CAD experience. Professional Engineer registration in the State of Alabama.

Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Must have a valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report as determined by the insurance carrier. Final candidates who are not current University of Alabama employees must submit to and successfully pass a post-offer drug screen.

Skills and Knowledge: Knowledge of ICC codes, including IBC, IMC, IPC, and IGC. Knowledge of ASHRAE Technical Standards applicable to building construction. Knowledge of NFPA Standards applicable to building construction. Knowledge of ADAAG requirements for restrooms and plumbing fixtures.

Preferred Qualifications: Revit, Central Plant Experience.
