The University of Mississippi seeks a Director of Faculty Development to promote faculty success initiatives and to oversee the University’s Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) on critical thinking. As part of the University of Mississippi’s new strategic plan, Flagship Forward, the University supports faculty excellence by providing opportunities to foster innovations in teaching, research, scholarship, engagement, and administrative leadership. The new Director of Faculty Development will help promote this innovation by sharing strategic leadership, program management, and supervisory duties for the University’s Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence (CETL). CETL is part of our Academic Innovation Hub, and the Director of Faculty Development will report to the Director of Academic Innovation. The successful candidate will share our commitment to faculty and student success, diversity and inclusion, and interdisciplinary collaborations. The candidate will also have a robust knowledge in the scholarship of critical thinking, teaching and learning (SoTL), active learning, and be committed to data-informed decision-making and assessment.

 

Responsibilities:

The Director of Faculty Development will be responsible for coordinating faculty development initiatives across campus. This responsibility requires the successful candidate to be highly collaborative, engaging with faculty, staff, students, and administrative leadership across the University. The Director will also be responsible for overseeing and implementing the University’s Quality Enhancement Plan—a 5-year, $3 million investment to promote faculty development and students’ critical thinking across disciplines, particularly in lower-division, general education courses. Additionally, the new Director will be responsible for fostering academic innovation through a collaboration with others in our Academic Innovation Hub. This will require the successful candidate to be supportive of all faculty and engage in interdepartmental initiatives to promote faculty success. The Director will be responsible for project assessment and evaluation efforts on a continuous basis, particularly tied to the QEP.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • An earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited university (Ph.D. or Ed.D.)
  • Three years of experience in faculty or educational development
  • Supervisory experience
  • Record of teaching excellence in a university setting
  • Robust knowledge of salient research, effective pedagogical practices, active learning theories, instructional design, and critical thinking
  • Eligibility for a faculty appointment either in a tenured, tenure-track, or non-tenure track position. Applicants holding a terminal degree with a demonstrated academic and scholarly record commensurate with appointment to a tenured position and currently holding tenure will be considered for tenure at the appropriate faculty rank in the applicable department within the university.
  • Experience in program development, data analysis, and assessment with broad campus collaboration.
  • Excellent presentation, writing, and collaboration skills
  • Demonstrated expertise in enhancing face-to-face, hybrid, and online teaching and learning
  • Demonstrated success in grant writing/ submission
  • Experience in providing instruction and consulting with faculty on effective student-centered teaching and learning
  • Knowledge and/or experience with major course redesign or transformation initiatives, particularly with lower-division, general education courses.
