East Carolina University is the third largest institution in the 16-member University of North Carolina system with an enrollment of nearly 29,000 students. ECU offers 84 bachelor’s degree programs, 71 master’s degree programs, 12 research doctoral degrees and, 2 first-professional programs (MD, DDS), the Brody School of Medicine, and School of Dental Medicine. ECU is located in Greenville, NC, a diverse and progressive city of approximately 75,000, within two hours driving distance of the Atlantic coast to the east and the Research Triangle area of Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill to the west. The College of Engineering and Technology is home to four departments: Engineering, Computer Science, Construction Management, and Technology Systems. The College maintains excellent laboratory facilities for instruction and research. There are many opportunities for interdisciplinary research collaborations with the Brody School of Medicine, School of Dental Medicine, College of Allied Health Sciences, Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences, College of Health and Human Performance and College of Business. The Department offers a BS in Engineering with concentrations in Biomedical Engineering, Bioprocess Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Industrial and Systems Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. There are currently 31 faculty and approximately 550 undergraduate engineering majors. The department has a rapidly growing undergraduate student population, a maturing graduate (MS) program in biomedical engineering in collaboration with the ECU Brody School of Medicine and the ECU School of Dental Medicine and a new MS in mechanical engineering with focus on biomaterials and energy systems.

Job Duties

The Department of Engineering is seeking a full time, 9-month, tenure track position at the assistant/associate professor level. The primary emphasis areas for engineering faculty are teaching excellence; collaborative, funded research and scholarship; and service to promote student success and enhance the quality and reputation of the Engineering program. Active involvement in outreach to industry is highly valued. Candidates should be committed to innovation and creativity in engineering education methods and approaches. Teaching assignments may range from core engineering courses such as introduction to engineering, engineering graphics, engineering design, or thermal and fluid systems to concentration courses such as fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, heat and mass transfer, or graduate courses such as thermal system design, renewable and sustainable energy systems, bioheat and mass transfer. Candidates will develop active, collaborative research programs and seek external funding support. Candidates will provide service to the university, community, and profession.

Minimum Education/Experience

Candidates are required to have a terminal degree in biomedical engineering or mechanical engineering or a related field from a regionally accredited institution and demonstrated potential for teaching excellence and developing a research program at ECU; however, ABD with significant qualifications may be considered for initial employment. ABD candidates will be initially appointed at the probationary rank of Assistant Professor and must have the terminal degree conferred prior to his/her first reappointment.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

Applicants in a wide range of biomedical engineering or mechanical engineering related disciplines will be considered but those with professional, research and/or teaching experience in areas such as the thermal and fluid sciences are especially sought. Research interests that can bridge both the mechanical and biomedical engineering graduate programs are preferred. Background in engineering education and student success strategies, as well as knowledge of continuous improvement processes and ABET accreditation requirements, are desirable. Industry experience and registration as a Professional Engineer are also desired as are experience in obtaining external funding, grant preparation and a record of scholarship.
