Mount Saint Mary College invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position as an Associate Professor in the Division of Natural Science, beginning August 2019. Minimum qualifications include a Ph.D. in Biology or closely related field and a strong interest in undergraduate education. Significant full time teaching experience in Higher Ed and the potential to continually develop as a teacher are essential.  

General Description

The successful candidate will be required to teach introductory and upper-level undergraduate biology courses for science majors, support courses for the school of Nursing and develop and courses that contribute to the General Education program courses for non -majors. The candidate may also teach additional upper-level courses in their area of expertise. Candidates should have a record of excellence in teaching at the college level; strong scholarship in their field of expertise; and demonstrated commitment to the pedagogies of active student learning. A focus of the Division is student directed research and the successful candidate will be required to develop a research program with undergraduate students, mentor them in submitting abstracts for scientific meetings and apply for graduate and undergraduate scholarships. Experience in student advising is required as the applicant will be required to lead the advising of students in pre-professional tracks. Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Teach upper level majors courses that include Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Genetics, Developmental Biology, Animal Physiology, Pathophysiology and the capstone seminar series. 
  2. Teach courses in human anatomy and physiology and the HHMI supported courses in and viral discovery and annotation for majors and non-majors. 
  3. Participate and teach in the First Year Experience Learning Communities. 
  4. Mentor students pursuing independent study.  
  5. Teach and mentor students in the Honors Program. 
  6. Conduct appropriate scholarly involvement in field of specialization. 
  7. Effectively advise both undergraduate and pre- professional track students. 
  8. Engage in professional stewardship to the department, college, discipline, and community, as appropriate. 
  9. Other duties as assigned by the department chair. 

Requirements

  1. Ph.D. in Biology or closely related field with relevant postdoctoral
  2. research experience. 
  3. Experience in teaching courses such that support the school of Nursing
  4. Division in addition to that of the Division of Natural Science.
  5. Enthusiasm for teaching undergraduates and evidence of excellent
  6. teaching or potential to develop into an excellent teacher 
  7. Plans for a research program with the ability to include undergraduate
  8. research 
  9. Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills

It's less than a mile from the intersection of the New York State Thruway and Interstate 84, and just a few blocks from entrance to the Newburgh side of the Beacon-Newburgh Bridge. The Mount is also easily accessible by plane, with Stewart Airport just minutes from campus. The Mid-Hudson Valley offers a scope of unparalleled natural beauty in a landscape of mountains, river and forest. Hiking, biking, walking, swimming, mountain climbing, skiing, snowboarding, and our park activities offer so many ways to explore the natural environment.

Enrollment/Student Body Profile. Our student body is made up of 2,700+ students representing over 16 states and several countries. 1,800 are traditional undergraduate students.

Academic Programs. The Mount offers 50 undergraduate programs leading to a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree. Our collaboration programs offer you a chance to earn a bachelor's degree, plus an advanced degree with schools like Fordham University, Pace University, and New York Medical College. The college also offers master's degrees in education, business, and nursing.

Faculty. Students learn from our faculty, the majority of whom hold a Ph.D. or the highest terminal degree in their field. Our Student/Faculty Ratio is 17 students:1 faculty member.
