Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs

Schreiner University in Kerrville, Texas is seeking applications and nominations for the position of Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs. The Provost reports to the President and serves as the chief academic officer of the University, as well as chief administrative officer for the institution in the President’s absence. As the chief academic officer, the Provost works collaboratively with all sectors of the campus community to promote student learning inside and outside the classroom, achieve the strategic goals that will guide the institution into its next 100 years, and design excellence throughout all aspects of the educational experience. We seek a leader with experience and a record of success as a teacher, scholar, and administrator. The Provost will have an understanding of the shared governance system of the University and will display a transparent and collaborative leadership. The new Provost will assume responsibilities on campus on July 1, 2019.

Schreiner University founded in 1923 in the heart of the Texas Hill Country is located an hour from San Antonio, Texas. Through its history it has served students from this region and beyond as a university with a covenant relation to the Presbyterian Church USA. Currently with a student body of 1,418 and a Strategic Plan: Schreiner 2023 that calls for an enrollment of 2,250, Schreiner University is a place of opportunity. Undergraduate and graduate students are served with a personalized, integrated, and holistic educational experience that prepares them for meaningful work and purposeful lives in a changing global society. The University offers majors in the traditional liberal arts and in professional and pre-professional programs: 27 undergraduate degree programs, 9 pre-professional programs, 3 graduate degree programs and certification programs, 3 nursing programs, 1 military academy program, and 1 program to support college students with learning disabilities. A strong faculty of 71 full-time faculty (supported by a committed group of adjunct faculty) support the academic programs. The faculty are committed to relational learning and incorporating active learning and high impact practices within their courses and their programs. Their work is supported by the Center for Teaching and Learning and the Center for Academic Innovation and Development. 

The Provost, as the chief academic officer, leads the educational programs and support units and actively participates in faculty governance. In the absence of the President, the Provost acts as the chief executive officer. The curricular programs at Schreiner University are organized into several divisions led by a Dean of Faculty, and other extra-curricular programs are organized through student services, campus ministry, athletics, and Varsity programs and led by a Dean of Students, Dean of Student Success, and other directors. The Provost will be a bold and energetic individual with a proven record of progressively responsible leadership. The Provost will have a passion for higher education, be intellectually curious and creative, demonstrate an entrepreneurial spirit, and communicate effectively. Qualifications and attributes include:

  • An earned doctorate or the equivalent professional degree;
  • Experience in academic administration in a position of significant leadership in academic affairs;
  • Significant teaching experience as a faculty member with tenure;
  • Excellent interpersonal, listening, and communication skills;
  • Ability to deal with ambiguity;
  • Strategic agility and political savvy;
  • Ability to develop and promote positive public relations with appropriate groups and organizations and to successfully articulate the role of an independent, church related college to a diverse public
