Overview

Do you love to create the future? Do you enjoy working with researchers, scientists and leading-edge information technology to change the world? Do you want to be on the leading edge of creating hybrid cloud environments and connected capabilities with high performance computing and big data to further scientific discovery? Princeton University needs a Cloud Architect to do just that, working with world renowned researchers and leading-edge technology on campus and in the cloud, leveraging deep understanding of cloud technologies and operational considerations to transition researchers to cloud resources in multiple ways. If you are interested in joining the Princeton University Office of Information Technology (OIT) in the Research Computing Department to take this journey with us, then please apply for this role.

The Research Computing department provides on-premises computational infrastructure totaling 3 PFLOPS, 6+ PB of high performance data storage, programming, training, and user support to enable research across the University. As a central team supporting our researchers, we work collaboratively with staff in academic departments to build an environment in which researchers can transition smoothly from individual devices, to departmental resources, to central resources, to regional and national resources. Our group is committed to building a collaborative environment respecting the knowledge and expertise of our team members and the researchers with whom we work to develop the best solutions for accelerating research in exciting leading edge scientific fields including high energy physics, computational biology, astrophysics, neuroscience, genomics, aerospace engineering, energy and the environment, politics, economics, data science, and computer science.

In this position, you will work closely with world renowned faculty and researchers across a broad range of disciplines. You will join a team of system administrators and programmers that is dedicated to enabling research at Princeton University, and you will help to expand that support to utilize cloud resources both on-premises and with external providers in a hybrid cloud environment. You will be driving the decisions that will transform the future of data and computational sciences to include cloud resources in the suite of IT tools available to our researchers. For example, in an upcoming project you would work with a faculty member to recommend compute, storage, cloud, and networking approaches that will bring together multiple petabyte datasets on campus and in the commercial cloud for analysis on commercial cloud computing resources. You will be at the forefront in developing collaborative and hybrid cloud environments for world leading research and thought leading researchers.

This position will provide you with the opportunity to work closely with colleagues in the Office of Information Technology (OIT) as well as with faculty, student/postdoctoral researchers, and technical staff in academic departments across the University to enable and accelerate their research computing efforts. Your breadth and depth of expertise will be challenged and your skills will grow.

Responsibilities

  • Team with colleagues in OIT and research to formulate an overall cloud strategy for research computing at the University
  • Assess the pros and cons of on-premises versus commercial cloud solutions, and develop hybrid cloud strategies to leverage both environments as appropriate
  • Develop pricing negotiation practices with commercial cloud providers
  • Negotiate contracts with cloud providers
  • Advise on the selection of specific hardware configurations, software images, data management, and scheduling needs while adhering to budgetary, contractual, and compliance requirements of the research and the university
  • Develop standard technical configurations to quickly meet the needs of researchers and deploy effective solutions in an efficient and sustainable manner
  • Gather requirements from researchers and work with them to transition their projects into the cloud as appropriate
  • Serve as a local expert to keep us up to date on cloud developments
  • Teach training classes and mini-courses on cloud computing

Qualifications

  • Ability to learn new systems beyond area of core knowledge
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse user base having varied levels of technical proficiencies
  • Substantial experience with data science and/or computational science

Preferred Experience
  • Experience working in an academic research environment
  • Experience in science, engineering, social science, or related field in a commercial, startup, government, or academic environment
