Position Summary

TheDirector, Health Information Management Operations directs, plans, andorganizes the staff and activities of the Health Information Management (HIM)department. This position oversees multidisciplinary operations and staff insupport of the efficient operation of the HIM department at Stony BrookUniversity Hospital (SBUH). The Director, Health Information Management Operations will report to the Director, Revenue Integrity.

Duties of the Director, Health Information Management Operations may include the following but are not limited to:

• Direct, plan, and organize activities of the Health Information Management department at Stony BrookUniversity Hospital, including:
• Information Access (Release of Information)
• Document Imaging
• Assembly and Analysis
• Medical Record completion processes
• Maintaining and updating SBUH’s Electronic Medical Recordsystem

• Collaborate with Information Technology and Medical Staffleadership related to the development and deployment of Health InformationManagement systems

• Participate in discussions and provide HIM expertise relatedto SBUH’s future technical EMR requirements

• Support and facilitate clinical, administrative and externaldata use functions. Participates in the quality assurance processes related toEMR-related data

• Monitor HIM systems and assist in establishing/revisingSBUH’s standards for data quality and ethical practice

• Review HIM departmentperformance in relation to established goals, implementing changes to effectimprovement in services provided

• Monitormonthly HIM department budget metrics, reporting any issues to Director,Revenue Integrity

• Develop/maintainHIM policies and procedures and serve as an internal consultant related to HIMissues

• Overseetranscription and outsource record storage vendors providing services for SBUH;review and approve invoices

• Overseevendor activities related to provision of Information Access (Release ofInformation) services for SBUH

• Overseethe Information Access (Release of Information) functions of the Stony BrookPhysician Practices in alignment with the SBUH process, including:
• Provision of education related to information access to thepractices’ leadership and relevant staff
• Serve as a resource for queries related to information access from the practices’ leadership and staff

• Participatein initiatives related to the EMR, Information Access and other HIM relatedoperations for the Stony Brook Physician Practices and across the organization

• Provideguidance related to best practices in facilitating continuity of the exchangeof patient health information across the organization

• Provideexpertise and guidance related to duplicate medical record number remediation,maintenance and integrity across the organization

• Ensurecompliance with all government and regulatory agency requirements andregulations as they pertain to HIM practices.

• Monitorand report on changes in legislation and accreditation standards which impacthealth information management

• Coordinatethe Medical Record Committee and Forms Committee functions

• Participatein the design and selection of forms used in the medical records

• Trackand ensure HIM staff credentials and certifications are current and AnnualEvaluations and Performance Programs are up-to-date consistent with SBUHpolicies

• Otherduties as assigned

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: Bachelor’sDegree with RHIA credential or Associates Degree in Health InformationManagement or equivalent with RHIT credential. Five or more years’ leadership experience in the HIM Departmentof a hospital/health system. Three or more years’ experience working in an HIM environmentwith Electronic Medical Record systems. Three or more years’ experience in overseeing Release ofInformation processes. Three or more years’ experience in overseeing Document Imagingprocesses. Demonstrable Project Management skills. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications. Excellent written and oral communication skills.

 

Preferred Qualifications: Master's Degree in health related or business related field. Five or more years’ experience as an HIM Department Director inan academic medical center. Experience in an HIM environment with Cerner’s ElectronicMedical Record system and Access HIM system. Experiencecollaborating with affiliated physician practices.
